You'll be responsible for the day-to-day operation of our editorial team, driving coverage, developing journalists, managing our digital presence, and ensuring Upper East Site remains the Upper East Side's most trusted and authoritative news source. Our ideal candidate is an experienced newsroom leader with sharp editorial instincts, strong organizational skills, and a genuine passion for local journalism. Five years of prior newsroom experience is required. Management experience preferred. Candidates must be based in New York City. Photography skills are a plus. About Us Upper East Site is a fast-growing, independent and non-partisan local news source known for its hard-hitting coverage of the Lenox Hill, Carnegie Hill and Yorkville neighborhoods of Manhattan's Upper East Side. Responsibilities Driving and overseeing a total newsroom output of 75 or more published pieces per month Owning the editorial calendar and managing daily publication decisions, story placement, and homepage curation Managing workflow and assignments for staff reporters, contributors, and freelancers Writing and producing original articles, including enterprise reporting, breaking news, and filling coverage gaps as needed Copy editing, fact-checking, and approving all content prior to publication Producing articles independently in WordPress, bringing each piece to publication-ready status Mentoring staff and serving as an editorial resource across the newsroom Participating in the vetting and hiring of contributors and new staff Managing Upper East Site's social media accounts and creating graphics using established templates Composing and distributing the daily afternoon email newsletter and breaking news alerts via WordPress Monitoring traffic, subscriber engagement, and email performance and reporting insights to the Executive Editor & Publisher Breaking news on your beat and generating original story ideas Maintaining a field presence on the Upper East Side About You Proven newsroom leadership experience Strong news instinct and sound editorial judgment under deadline Impeccable ethics Demonstrated ability to manage and develop journalists Experience with digital publishing, social media, and email newsletter production Familiarity with the Upper East Side Organized, collaborative, and calm under pressure Compensation The Managing Editor position starts at $80,000/year. Benefits include a health insurance stipend, 15 days paid vacation, 10 sick days, 2 personal days, and 8 paid holidays.
