$32.00 to 35.00 per hour Job Summary The Graphic Designer is a mid-level designer who brings creative discipline, sharp visual instincts, and marketing-focused design thinking to support San Diego Blood Bank's mission to save lives. This role is focused on visual problem solving: creating clean, compelling, brand-aligned designs across print and digital channels that support campaign, business, and communication goals. The Graphic Designer translates briefs into strategic creative assets, supports monthly promotional launches and high-volume marketing needs, and proactively elevates visuals, copy, and layouts before work reaches approval. Responsibilities Design Production and Execution Design and produce campaign assets quickly and effectively for monthly promotional launches, high-volume creative requests, and print, digital, social, presentation, web or landing page, and event materials. Collaborate with marketing, communications, and internal stakeholders to translate project briefs into strategic, results-driven deliverables that align with audience, brand, and campaign goals. Prepare print-ready files with proper technical specifications, including dpi/ppi, resolution, bleed, color systems, and production requirements. Quality Control and Brand Management Review all work critically before submission, catching typos, layout flaws, copy inconsistencies, visual errors, and brand issues before projects reach approval. Apply design expertise in typography, grid-based layouts, branding systems, and visual hierarchy to ensure clarity, consistency, and impact. Maintain and work within established brand systems, asset libraries, and visual identity guidelines. Design across multiple brands or styles and adapt visual approaches for different audiences while maintaining quality, accessibility, and brand alignment. Collaboration and Communication Present design work confidently, explaining design choices and strategy in simple, goal-oriented terms and incorporating feedback professionally. Manage workload independently while remaining communicative, responsive, and deadline-focused. Know when to engage teammates or stakeholders to keep work moving and ensure the strongest final product. Additional Marketing and Creative Duties Coordinate logistics and materials for community marketing initiatives with hands-on execution Write, review, and edit written and multimedia content. Take and edit photography of locations, merchandise, and models as needed. Ensure compliance with legal standards and organizational policies in all communications and events. Understand and adhere to the policies and standards as developed as part of the San Diego Blood Bank Compliance Program. Perform other duties as necessary or assigned to support departmental goals.
Qualifications Education:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, or related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience
Certifications/Licenses:
None Experience:
3-5 years of professional graphic design experience with a strong portfolio demonstrating modern, brand-conscious design across print and digital platforms Experience in fast-paced, high-volume marketing environments managing monthly campaigns, multiple deadlines, and assets across print, digital, social, presentation, event, and web channels Experience working in nonprofit, healthcare, or mission-driven organizations is highly desirable
Skills:
Mastery of Adobe Creative Suite (lnDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop); comfort with Canva, Google Slides, or similar tools beneficial Strong expertise in print design and production, including dpi vs. ppi, resolution requirements, bleed, color systems (CMYK/RGB/Pantone), and file preparation Advanced understanding of grid-based design, typography, layout composition, color theory, visual hierarchy, and visual storytelling Expertise with brand systems, asset libraries, visual identity guidelines, and adapting visual approaches across multiple brands or styles Knowledge of UX/UI fundamentals, front-end web design, landing page creation, and basic
HTML/CSS
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong proofreading, editing, and quality-control instincts Strong organizational and time management skills with ability to balance speed and precision under tight deadlines Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) Collaborative self-starter who works independently while knowing when to engage teammates or stakeholders to keep work moving Detail-oriented quality champion who takes pride in delivering polished, accurate, and error-free work Culturally aware, trend-informed, and sensitive to diverse audiences, with ability to create inclusive and accessible designs Marketing-focused mindset that prioritizes business objectives and measurable results over personal artistic preferences
