As a direct-hire teammate with a major Tier 1 supplier in Auburn Hills, you'll craft precision tooling and prototypes that move ideas from print to production—backed by strong benefits. Why this role? Do you enjoy turning blueprints and MBD models into reality? Do you switch effortlessly between machining, welding, and assembly? Do you thrive on troubleshooting and improving designs until they meet acceptance metrics? Role Snapshot Build and assemble tooling/prototypes to specification for assembly operations. Plan layouts, compute dimensions, and sequence operations for efficient builds. Set up and operate lathes, Bridgeport, mills, grinders, drill press, CNC, band saws, and more. Fabricate and weld components; join using bolts, pins, clamps, screws, rivets, etc. Fit, align, assemble, and measure with precision instruments to ensure conformance. Test and calibrate to meet tight tolerances; repair or rework as needed. Identify failing units and resolve issues; lead root cause analysis and define irreversible corrective actions. Research, develop, and design assembly processes/equipment; consult with vendors and operators; test proposed methods. Track build deliverables (outsourced, purchased, in-house) through to final product delivery. Provide written inputs for design reviews, proposals, specifications, work standards, and business processes. Communicate progress to the Shop Manager; follow priorities set by the department manager. Document and protect design records; maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Promote health and safety; keep your work area clean and organized; complete QMS forms and reports on time. Teach and share best practices; sketch and draft build instructions for teammates; suggest and support continuous improvement. Represent the company professionally with customers and suppliers. Assist in maintaining inventory levels in the build shop; perform other duties as assigned. What You'll Use Hand/power tools: hand drill, angle grinder, Metabo, chop saw, horizontal band saw, drill press.
Machining:
lathes, Bridgeport, mills, grinders, CNC.
Welding/fab:
MIG (required); TIG (a plus); drilling/tapping; general assembly.
CAD:
SolidWorks, AutoCAD preferred; mark up prints to reflect "as built." Must-Haves High School Diploma or GED. 2+ years in automotive prototype/tooling/machine building; pneumatic or electrical exposure is a plus. Fluent blueprint reading; can machine parts directly from prints and determine when a print cannot be executed as drawn. Comfort building tooling and machine details "on the fly" from verbal directions or sketches. Analytical, creative problem-solver with a "let's try it" mindset. Knowledge of assembly processes and operations (sequencing, sub-assembly, shipping/receiving, tooling). Proficiency with SolidWorks or AutoCAD; Microsoft Word and Excel. Algebra and geometry skills. Strong written and verbal communication for complex technical topics. Ability to work independently with minimal direction; multitask under pressure and meet deadlines. Daily end-of-shift cleanup; adherence to PPE and safety guidelines; team-first attitude. Valid driver's license and personal vehicle. Travel Moderate travel required.
