Sign Language Interpreter
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
AND/OR EXPERIENCE
This position requires the following to exhibit appropriate skills in the communication system utilized by the hearing-impaired student, which may include American Sign Language (ASL), fingerspelling, manual codes for English, gestures, oral communication, cued speech and/or simultaneous communication. 1. Valid permit or license following the Alabama Board of Interpreters and Transliterators (ALBIT) state requirements. 2. Fluency in American English and American Sign Language (ASL) or Signed Exact English (SEE) 3. High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) AND successful passing completion of the ALSDE- approved

TERMS OF EMPOYMENT
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the system's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the system.
DUTIES AND PRESPONSIBILITIES
  • Interprets classroom activities which may include lectures, conferences, peer conversation, student contributions, videos, assemblies, etc.
  • Interprets for students utilizing the students' preferred mode of communication as documented in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 plan.
  • Collaborates with teachers and staff who are working with a deaf or hard-of- hearing student concerning language assessment and development as well as supporting the access to all instruction and materials.
  • Is familiar with technology related to deafness such as hearing aids and auditory training systems.
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  • Acts as the liaison to promote positive public relations between the deaf/hard-of- hearing students and their hearing peers/teachers.
  • Prepares for daily classroom lectures and activities (e.g. set up for speaker, review materials ahead of lectures, learns appropriate vocabulary etc.) for the purpose of ensuring a clear understanding and interpretation.
  • Provides academic support, such as tutoring/support to the deaf/hard-of-hearing student, as outlined in the IEP and under the guidance of a certified teacher.
  • Assists deaf/hard-of-hearing students in academic and nonacademic activities, individually or in groups as well as deaf/hard-of-hearing staff and parents (e.g. classroom instruction, non- captioned movies, tests, library, computer lab, recess, etc.) for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
  • Respects confidentiality in all areas of interpreting/ assignments; as well as maintains an appropriate interpreter - student relationship at all times in accordance with NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct and Dothan City Schools policy.
  • Demonstrates professionalism in all interactions with individuals within the educational setting.
  • Demonstrates and understands the educational process of interpreting by attending professional development including LEA- provided interpreter training during staff development.
  • Assume other duties as assigned by the supervisor that do not impact the effectiveness of the interpreting service to the deaf or hard-of-hearing student.
EVALUATION
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
