Position Summary:
Provides sign-language interpreter services. Interprets lectures, discussions, announcements, conversations, meetings, events, and other spoken word situations using American Sign Language or other manual sign system appropriate for the language and the cultural background of deaf or hard of hearing students and staff. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Provides interpreter services for deaf/hard of hearing students. Provides voice interpreting as needed. When scheduling permits, provides interpreting for tutoring done by regular classroom teachers. Provides interpreting for school functions outside the classroom, during regularly scheduled school hours. Serves as a liaison to promote good public relations between the deaf/hard of hearing students, hearing peers, staff, faculty members, and parents. Participates as a part of the instructional team to provide continuity of instruction for students as identified in their individual education plan or as assigned by the teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing. Confers with regular classroom teachers and teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing in order to better prepare for interpreting services. Assists with the collection and correlation of materials used in both the regular and the deaf/hard of hearing classroom work. Assists with developing communication skills, socialization, and playground skills. Maintains confidentiality to protect privacy of students, families, and staff Adheres to the Professional Code of Conduct established by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Attends in-service programs to improve skills necessary to deal with students in the deaf/hard of hearing program. Assists in maintaining equipment used in the classroom including auditory trainers. Rides bus and assists with loading and unloading of students at home and school as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of American Sign Language and Manually Coded English systems. Knowledge of basic behavior patterns and problems of deaf or hard of hearing students Knowledge of hearing aids and FM systems. Knowledge of educational progress of deaf or hard of hearing students Knowledge of classroom procedures and techniques Knowledge of instructional methods and techniques. Comprehensive knowledge of the general child development behavior patterns, and problems of normal hearing and deaf and hard of hearing children and youth Comprehensive knowledge of the specific behavior patterns, problems, and needs of students in classes to which assigned Knowledge of deaf culture Knowledge of instructional methods and techniques generally applicable to working with deaf and hard of hearing children and youth Ability to interpret academic subjects at appropriate instructional level for students to whom assigned Ability to gain the confidence of, and work effectively with deaf and hard of hearing students Ability to maintain an understanding of the problems of deaf and hard of hearing children Ability to effectively apply a variety of instructional methods and techniques for deaf or hard of hearing students Ability to assist with learning activities Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions. Ability to effectively apply specialized training, education, and work experience in working with the problems and needs of students in Special Education Programs Knowledge of accepted behavior management techniques and practices. Ability to assess students for progress and standards reports. Demonstrate general proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Ability to operate standard office equipment. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Strong listening skills. Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instruction. Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations. Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents and community members. Ability to work collegially and collaboratively Willingness to grow and develop professionally Perform all duties in accordance with Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
One year experience working with school age children Experience working with the deaf population High School Diploma or equivalent Educational Interpreting Performance Assessment (EIPA) ASL Certificate Any equivalent combination of training, education and experience that meets minimum requirements
Preferred:
Experience as an interpreter/transliterate and/or completion of an accredited college level Interpreter training program is preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, stoop and walk. The employee may be required to occasionally lift up to 40 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position regularly works indoors (classroom) and outdoors (playground, etc.) in all kinds of weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate and may become excessively noisy at times. Will have extensive contact with students, teachers, staff and the public. •Internal candidates must submit a request for transfer form signed by your site administrator within 5 working days of the posting date. •$30.58/hour - 9 Month position - 37.5 hours/week Employees hired into this position are required to submit a copy of their social security card to the department of Exceptional Student Services in order to bill Medicaid.
