Time Varies, Workplace Type (Exclude Inst Fac): On-site (work in-person at business location) Job Summary Under general supervision of the Director of the Disability Resource Center, incumbents in this position provide interpreting services for campus events, instructional classes or related instructional settings and activities involving standard complexity factors such as the type of communication system needed, difficulty of subject matter, speed of interpreting required, and number of consumers served simultaneously. The position is responsible for delivering high quality, accurate interpretation within the framework of professional standards. The incumbent makes independent decisions at the time of interpretation about the most effective methods to use for the delivery of sign language interpreting services. Department Summary The Disability Resource Center (DRC) is a central service unit within Student Affairs. The DRC consults with the campus community to promote welcoming environments and facilitate equal opportunity for students with disabilities in their academic courses, campus services, and all student programs and activities. The DRC collaborates with students to identify and eliminate potential and real barriers to accessibility by promoting inclusive design, providing reasonable accommodations, and assessing effectiveness. Key Qualifications Ability to hear spoken English and use ASL, Signed English, and/or another manual sign system to effectively generate language. Working knowledge of the process of interpretation to convey accurately the register, tone, intent, and content of the consumer's message. Ability to interpret and transliterate between both ASL, spoken English and sign systems at a speed required by the assignment, which may involve a variety of settings such as a classroom, event, conference and/or one-on-one meeting. Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in communicating with Deaf and Hard of Hearing consumers. Working knowledge of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) code of professional conduct. Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, staff. Education and Experience Any combination of formal training and relevant documented interpreting experience that demonstrates assurance of the skills appropriate for the level of the assignment(s) is required.
