Job Description

DIVISION
Superior Court
CLASS DEFINITION
This class is accountable for assisting in the supervision of statewide interpreting services for assisting non-English speaking people in courtrooms and related legal environments.
GUIDELINES FOR CLASS USE
This class serves as a working lead position for assisting in supervising, as well as performing, interpreting and translation assignments in the state's courts and related legal venues. Interpreting and translation assignments may be in courtrooms or other locations, such as arraignment holding rooms, in support of court operations. Although incumbents may perform routine interpreting or translation tasks, they may be assigned to complex, high profile or critically important cases. Target language typically is Spanish but may be other languages as required by defendants, witnesses and other non-English-speaking parties as provided for under Connecticut law. The position performs the full range of duties of the Court Interpreter II as well as assisting in supervision of Interpreters and the operations of statewide court interpreting services.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives general direction from an employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
The position functions as a working lead over Court Interpreters and other lower level staff as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Prioritizes and makes workload and schedule assignments to Interpreters and other staff; reviews Interpreters' work and advises them on useful improvements as well as needed corrections; assists with recruitment and training of Interpreters; performs administrative tasks such as assisting in preparation of personnel and payroll forms, including mileage reimbursement and statistical reports; consults with judges and court officials regarding scheduling of staff; may provide information to the supervisor for staff service ratings; performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY
Proficiency in sight, simultaneous and consecutive interpreting and written language translation with college-level vocabulary in English and Spanish or other specified language; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; computer usage skills.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
General Experience:
Four years of experience in interpreting and translating from and into Spanish or other specified language as primary responsibility.
Special Experience:
Must have passed the Consortium for the State Court Interpreters' Certification and fulfilled all program requirements; or hold the court interpreter certification from the Administrative Offices of the United States Courts.
Substitutions Allowed:
College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen semester hours equaling one-half year of experience to a maximum of two years for an Associate's degree.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Incumbents may be required to travel in the course of their daily work.
