Language on Demand, Inc. is a government contracting firm located in Northern Virginia, United States. We provide a full range of language and staffing services for government and commercial clients. Position Summary Language on Demand, Inc. is seeking an experienced Creole Interpreter to provide linguistic support while living onboard a U.S. Coast Guard cutter within the District Seven Area of Responsibility. The interpreter will provide Creole-English and English-Creole interpretation support during maritime operations. This position requires the interpreter to live onboard the vessel during deployment and remain available to provide services at any time due to operational needs, including weekends, holidays, and nighttime hours. Duties and Responsibilities Provide Creole-English and English-Creole interpretation services while living onboard a U.S. Coast Guard cutter. Remain available to render services at any time during the deployment period due to operational needs, including weekends, holidays, and nighttime hours. Understand Creole speakers and rapidly interpret information accurately into English and from English into Creole. Interpret the meaning, tone, and intent of speakers' statements. Help put migrants at ease, gain their confidence, and interpret at their level of reasoning and understanding. Understand that during time at sea, the interpreter should not expect time at a port call or on land. Reside in accommodations afforded to a member of the cutter's crew. Embark and disembark vessels via aircraft, land, dockside, or open sea, which may require climbing, bending, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and reaching under unknown and various sea conditions. Be appropriately prepared with suitable attire for vessel and aircraft operations, such as long pants, shoes, boots, coveralls, and similar items. Follow applicable U.S. Coast Guard policies, procedures, and onboard expectations while assigned to the vessel. Qualifications Ability to understand Creole speakers and rapidly and accurately interpret from Creole to English and from English to Creole. Skilled in interpreting the meaning, tone, and intent of speakers' statements. Prior professional interpretation experience required. Physically fit and able to work in a maritime environment. Able to swim and tread water. Comfortable embarking and disembarking vessels under various sea conditions. Comfortable boarding foreign vessels that may present discomfort, danger, or health risks. Possess necessary travel documentation, such as a passport, naturalization certificate if applicable, and/or other required documentation for possible reentry into the United States. Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and able to provide proof of vaccination. Must be able to live onboard a U.S. Coast Guard cutter during deployment. Additional Information Berthing and messing will be provided while aboard U.S. Coast Guard vessels. Normal departure and return are expected from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or other locations in South Florida. Interpreter rotation is expected approximately every 30 days to prevent fatigue or hardship.
