5.35 Education Interpreter (ASL) - Hearing Impaired Purpose Statement The position of Education Interpreter - Hearing Impaired is to help teachers provide for physical and instructional needs of students with hearing disabilities in the school setting. Assist in implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of the certified teacher.Job Title:

B Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED Must apply and obtain a Valid Iowa Department of Professional Licensure, Board of Sign Language Interpreters & Translators https://boee.iowa.gov/licauthorization/paraeducator-certification Knowledge of correct English usage, conceptually accurate signed English (American Sign Language (ASL) Experience working with children, preferred Essential Functions Accurately perform American Sign Language (ASL) Facilitate effective communication between two parties. Attend conferences and meetings and act as the official translator for the school and student/families to mediate discussions. Translate educational materials and informational materials issued by the school and district to support student learning. Employ computer-assisted translation, when needed. Inform supervisor immediately when interpreting sensitive and/or reportable issues. Interpret both legal terminology and colloquial language. Encourage students and families to participate in school activities and promote school involvement. Assist with academic, social, emotional, and health needs of students. Other Functions Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned. Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without close supervision. Demonstrates integrity and maintains confidentiality. Works well with others, maintaining positive and effective communication with all school personnel. Is respectful and appropriately interacts with staff, students, and visitors. Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of the Ankeny Community School District safety program. Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follows all district policies. Demonstrates the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to nutrition operations. Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others. Performs other related duties, as assigned. Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution. Working Environment Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress. Terms of Employment Work year established by the District; Salary according to schedule adopted annually. Clearances Background Clearance. Evaluation Job performance will be evaluated annually, as per district policies and procedures.
