Job Description

Interpreter Opportunity•Central Alaskan Yup'ik (Local & Village-Based Applicants Encouraged) Job Summary We are seeking qualified Central Alaskan Yup'ik Interpreters to support disaster response operations in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Interpreters will provide critical language services to ensure effective communication between FEMA personnel and survivors in affected communities. This role requires flexibility, cultural competency, and the ability to work in fast-paced and sometimes challenging field environments, including remote Alaskan villages.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide accurate, real-time interpretation between Central Alaskan Yup'ik and English Support communication during inspections, interviews, and survivor assistance interactions Deliver services in multiple formats: In-person (onsite) Over-the-phone interpretation (OPI) Video/virtual platforms (Zoom or similar) Maintain confidentiality of all survivor and FEMA-related information Keep accurate records of assignments, including call logs and onsite attendance Educate FEMA personnel on cultural norms when appropriate Be available for rapid response and scheduling coordination
Requirements:
Fluency in Central Alaskan Yup'ik and English (required) Familiarity with regional dialects preferred Strong communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work in remote and/or hazardous environments Willingness to travel, including air travel to rural villages Valid government or tribal-issued photo ID Reliable transportation for local travel Ability to respond to requests within required timeframes Commitment to maintaining strict confidentiality
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience in medical, legal, or disaster response interpreting Knowledge of FEMA programs and terminology (training materials provided) Experience working with tribal or rural communities Local candidates strongly encouraged to apply
Work Schedule:
Availability required Sunday•Saturday, 6:00 AM•7:00 PM Must be able to respond to requests within 2 hours and confirm availability within 12 hours
Compensation:
$35•$70 per hour (based on experience and qualifications) Travel expenses covered when applicable Per diem may be provided for remote assignments Overtime opportunities during active deployments
