Dental, Health, Vision, PTO Job Overview We are seeking a Linguist III to support our client's multilingual AI research initiatives focused on language understanding, Responsible AI, and large-scale linguistic analysis. In this role, you will partner closely with researchers, engineers, data scientists, and cross-functional teams to improve AI systems across diverse languages and cultural contexts. The ideal candidate combines strong academic foundations in linguistics with hands-on analytical skills, strong research communication, and an interest in AI and multilingual technologies. Job Responsibilities Perform linguistic analyses on large multilingual datasets Conduct linguistic error analysis of AI model outputs and identify frequent or high-severity error categories Write, refine, and maintain guidelines for annotation and translation workflows Conduct sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and pragmatics research across multiple languages, identifying similarities and distinctions between linguistic systems Support Responsible AI initiatives through analysis of toxic language, hate speech, gender bias, and cultural bias in multilingual environments Conduct literature reviews on NLP-adjacent linguistic topics and summarize research findings Evaluate linguistic quality across vendors, identify recurring issues, and provide actionable feedback Serve as a subject matter expert across areas including typology, syntax, morphology, phonetics/phonology, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and language classification Collaborate with native speakers and cross-functional stakeholders across global language communities Communicate research findings and linguistic insights to engineers and research scientists Qualifications Must be near-native proficient in a language other than English, preferably Vietnamese, Dutch, Portuguese, or Thai. Must be able to code in Python (must) and query databases using SQL, other coding languages used for data analysis (e.g., R) are a plus. Must have strong written and spoken communication skills, especially business and research communication. Must have solid theoretical and practical foundations in the dynamics of conversations (turn taking, repairs, interruptions, argumentation, persuasion, compromising, etc.) Working knowledge in other languages is a plus. Proficiency in a low-resource language is valued. Must be able to independently work through complex requests and perform under pressure. Strong ability to work independently, prioritize, plan, and track work, as well as report progress education or training in the basics of project management is a plus self-motivation is a must Working knowledge of international language-classification standards is valued. Education Graduate degree in Linguistics or related field is a must; PhD is a plus A background or specialization in corpus linguistics is a plus Must-Have HARD Skills Must be able to code in Python (must) and query databases using SQL, other coding languages used for data analysis (e.g., R) are a plus. Actual hands-on Python coding ability for data analysis and linguistic evaluation workflows Perform linguistic error analysis of machine translations, identifying the most frequent and severe error categories Strong pattern recognition skills with the ability to synthesize findings across datasets and languages Strong cross-functional communication skills with demonstrated ability to multitask across competing priorities Good-to-Have Skills Experience creating and/or maintaining specialized lexical resources (e.g., profanity dictionaries, hate speech lexicons, controlled vocabularies) Familiarity with linguistic resource development for safety, moderation, or AI alignment use cases Exposure to multilingual NLP datasets or low-resource language systems Pursuant to the California Fair Chance Act, Los Angeles County Fair Chance Ordinance for Employers, Los Angeles Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring Ordinance, and San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, qualified applicants will be considered for assignment with arrest and conviction records.
