Job Summary The University of Michigan is seeking a skilled American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to provide language access services in a biomedical and research setting. This is a temporary, part-time position on an as-needed basis. This role will support deaf and hard-of-hearing researchers, participants, and collaborators in a dynamic academic environment. The ideal candidate will have experience in medical interpreting and research settings, including technical and scientific terminology, and be comfortable working in a variety of research and training interactions, such as interviews, conferences, meetings, and presentations. Interpreters are expected to be appropriately credentialed and follow performance standards of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) Code of Ethics. Responsibilities• Provide high-quality ASL interpreting for research-related activities, including but not limited to lab meetings, research presentations, data collection interviews, training events, grant related teaching and academic discussions. -- The work is expected to be both ASL to English, and English to ASL. Interpret complex and technical language related to scientific, social science, and medical research fields. Adapt interpreting methods to ensure clarity and accessibility for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in a research and training environment. Facilitate effective communication between deaf and hearing researchers, study participants, and collaborators. Collaborate with research teams to understand project-specific language needs and terminology. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines in interpreting and research. Support the development of accessible research materials as needed. Required Qualifications• Credential in American Sign Language interpreting, such as:
BEI II, BEI III, RID NIC, RID NIC
Advanced, RID NIC Master, RID
CI, RID CT, NAD
4 or 5. Ability to work with diverse teams of people in a diplomatic, collaborative and effective manner. Access to reliable high-speed Internet. Strong understanding of deaf culture and accessibility needs in higher education and research. Fluency in English and ASL Knowledge of medical terminology in English and ASL Desired Qualifications•

Work Schedule This is a term-limited part-time position, for work scheduled in advance. Work hours will be no more than 10 hours per week on a schedule mutually beneficial to the Department and the candidate. The position is expected to be hybrid, with most research meetings and interactions conducted via videoconferencing. Background Screening Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
