In the Sioux Falls School District, we believe every student and family deserves to feel welcomed, valued, and connected. Serving families from more than 100 language backgrounds, our English Learner Program team helps build strong partnerships between schools and homes while supporting students as they grow academically and socially. We are seeking a caring and dedicated individual to join our team as English Learner School Home Liaison. In this role, you will help families navigate the school system, strengthen communication between home and school, and advocate for students and families as they adjust to new educational and cultural experiences. REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION LEVEL
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree or comparable/equivalent degree/level from another country.
EXPERIENCE DESIRED
Three to five years of experience working with refugee, immigrant and migrant families or organizations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Constant hand-eye/mind-eye coordination and hearing; intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, dialing, filing, grasping, indexing, keyboarding, lifting, driving, and speaking are required.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Proficiency reading, speaking and writing in English and in at least one of the high incidence languages in the District required so as to effectively communicate with refugee, immigrant and migrant students and their parents. Must have an ability to acquire a comprehensive working knowledge of school district policies as they relate to state and federal rules and regulations. Must have a valid driver's license and insurance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES
Serves as a liaison between the District and families relative to attendance, school enrollment, health issues, tardiness, and cultural programs. Effectively communicates with students and families regardless of any language barriers or seeks alternatives for interpretation. Completes all time and effort reports. Facilitates transportation solutions for students and parents for school attendance and meeting purposes. Advocates for English Learner students and their families as assigned by a supervisor. Designs and coordinates meetings for parent and/or student information or training opportunities regarding acculturation issues related to education. Promotes parental involvement in the schools and is the link between the school and home to help families understand the expectations for their children's success in school. Available to work day/evening hours and/or a split shift. Performs other duties that may be assigned by the administration. Last working day of each month.
HOURS & FTE
Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. 1.0 FTE, 40 hours per week, 9 months
