Job Description

Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting, certified ASL Interpreter credentials, and 1+ year of experience as an ASL Interpreter in educational settings. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered. Step into a meaningful opportunity supporting a 9th-grade student in a behavioral classroom, serving as a Sign Language Interpreter within a busy high school environment near Houston. This contract role spans the school year, running from August 12, 2026, through May 27, 2027, with a consistent schedule of Monday through Thursday, averaging 26 hours per week. Your interpreting services will be focused on instructional times only, creating a manageable and rewarding daily rhythm. You'll work closely with a student who utilizes cochlear implants, hearing aids, and an ALD device, supporting their academic experience as they transition from a Residential Day School Program. This individual identifies as hearing, though their spoken language is unintelligible, making your role in facilitating communication in the classroom essential.
Qualifications and Experience:
Current certification as a Sign Language Interpreter; proof of licensure required Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) Experience working in educational settings, preferably with high school students Understanding of the needs of students with hearing impairments and behavioral challenges Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, therapists, and support staff Compassion, adaptability, and strong professional boundaries
Responsibilities:
Provide clear and accurate ASL interpretation for class instruction (excluding lunch and arrival/dismissal times) Foster an inclusive learning environment through effective communication Collaborate with educators on classroom goals and support strategies Maintain confidentiality and documentation as required Encourage the student's adjustment and participation in the school setting Come make a difference in an educational community, facilitating language access and empowering a student's daily learning experience.
