Job Description

Category Schools - Sign Language Interpreter Job Type Contract Make a real difference in students' lives by providing essential communication support as a Sign Language Interpreter for a full-time contract assignment near Chesapeake, VA. Work collaboratively in K-12 educational settings during the upcoming 2026-2027 school year, ensuring that deaf and hard-of-hearing students receive access to instruction and classroom engagement.
Desired Experience and Qualifications:
Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) and other relevant modes of communication Holds applicable state and/or national certification for educational interpreting, or eligibility to obtain such credentials Previous experience interpreting in schools or working with children and adolescents is strongly preferred Knowledge of classroom practices, educational terminology, and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) Ability to build rapport with students, teachers, and support staff Clear background screening and compliance with district requirements
Core Responsibilities:
Deliver high-quality interpreting services for students in grades K-12 during instructional and extracurricular activities Facilitate effective two-way communication between students, teachers, peers, and staff Support student participation, learning, and social development by accurately interpreting spoken and signed messages Adapt sign language methods as needed to meet the diverse needs of each student Collaborate regularly with the educational team to discuss student progress and strategies for access Uphold confidentiality and maintain professional conduct in all school environments If you are committed to fostering accessible learning experiences and ready to work with students from elementary through high school, this contract opportunity may be ideal for you.
