Job Description

Category Schools - Sign Language Interpreter Job Type Contract This opportunity seeks four skilled American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters to support K-12 students during the 2026-2027 academic year in Newport News, VA. Working 35 hours per week on a contract basis from August 24, 2026, to June 9, 2027, interpreters will assist in a variety of classroom settings including elementary and high school, facilitating communication and providing essential support for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Responsibilities include:
Providing clear and accurate ASL interpretation for students ranging from kindergarten through 12th grade. Supporting an elementary student's day from 8:40 a.m. to 3:20 p.m., including another elementary student with the same schedule. Interpreting for a 12th-grade high school student pursuing a standard diploma from 7:20 a.m. to 2:05 p.m. Potentially interpreting for a 10th-grade high school student working on a modified diploma within the same time frame. Collaborating with teachers, administrators, and other staff to create an inclusive learning environment. Maintaining professional standards and confidentiality. Ideal candidates will hold a VQAS Level 3 certification or an Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 3.0 or higher, demonstrating proficiency in ASL interpretation within educational settings.
