Job Description
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) to facilitate communication between individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and hearing individuals. The primary goal is to provide accurate, fluid, and culturally sensitive interpretation in a variety of settings, ensuring all parties have equal access to information and participation. Key Responsibilities Provide high-quality American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation, including voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice. Translate spoken language into sign language and vice versa, maintaining the message's original intent, tone, and nuance. Prepare for assignments by researching technical terminology or specialized subject matter relevant to the setting (e.g., educational, medical, or legal). Adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct, maintaining strict confidentiality and neutrality. Collaborate with clients and staff to ensure the physical environment is conducive to effective communication (e.g., lighting, positioning). Assess the communication needs of the consumers and adjust interpretation styles accordingly (e.g., PSE, SEE, or Tactile). Qualifications Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English. Bachelor's degree in Interpretation, Linguistics, or a related field. Active certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or National Association of the Deaf (NAD), or equivalent state-level licensure. Deep understanding of Deaf culture and the nuances of the Deaf community. Excellent listening, memory, and concentration skills. Ability to remain professional and impartial in emotionally charged or high-pressure situations. Work Environment This role may require travel to various sites. The interpreter must be able to sit or stand for extended periods and maintain the physical stamina required for continuous signing.
