Job Description

Are you the person who makes sure every technical detail is documented, spec'd, and production-ready before anything gets built? We're looking for a Technical Designer who lives in Vectorworks, can design projects from the ground up, and owns the technical specifications that power our live productions. You're not waiting for direction on every detail — you're a skilled designer in your own right who can take a concept and build it into a fully realized, production-ready technical plan. You'll work alongside our Senior Technical Production Designer, supporting the design process while taking full ownership of the specs and documentation that ensure every production is built exactly as designed. Once the vision is set, you're the one making sure every detail is captured, documented, and communicated clearly to vendors, venues, and production crews. You ensure specs are documented, communicated, and tracked with changes. You're proficient in Vectorworks and CAD and capable of producing and maintaining technical drawings — but the core of this role is owning the specifications and making sure the Technical Production Designer has everything they need to keep moving. This role reports directly to the Head of Production. This position is based out of our Costa Mesa office and supports projects globally. Our team designs and delivers exceptional live experiences, broadcast productions, and branded content for world-class clients.
WHAT YOU'LL OWN
Technical Drawings & CAD Produce and maintain technical drawings in Vectorworks and CAD — including floor plans, stage layouts, AV plots, rigging plans, and elevation views. Ensure every drawing is accurate, detailed, and reflects the current state of specs. Specifications Ownership Own the full lifecycle of technical specifications across every production — AV systems, LED configurations, lighting requirements, rigging, and power. You build the specs, maintain them, track changes, and ensure every stakeholder is working from the most current, accurate documentation at all times. AV Specifications Spec detailed AV specifications for every production — including equipment lists, signal flow, system architecture, and technical requirements. Spec and document LED configurations including panel types, resolution, pixel pitch, mounting, and rigging requirements. Ensure all specs are accurate, current, aligned with creative intent, and clearly communicated to vendors and internal teams. Rigging & Power Documentation Own all rigging plans and power distribution documentation. Calculate loads, draft rigging plots, and produce power distribution plans. Ensure all documentation is compliant and submission-ready for venues and local authorities. Venue Technical Advances Gather and document venue-specific technical information — including floor plans, power availability, rigging points, load-in logistics, and any site constraints that impact design and specifications. Vendor Spec Communication Ensure all vendors receive clear, complete, and accurate technical specifications. Serve as the technical point of contact for spec-related questions, clarifications, and revisions throughout the production process.
QUALIFICATIONS
5+ years in technical production design, AV engineering, or a specifications-focused production role Proficiency in Vectorworks and CAD — this is a primary drafting role and you will be in these tools daily Strong working knowledge of AV systems, signal flow, LED technology, lighting, rigging, and power distribution Experience producing technical specifications and documentation for large-scale live events, broadcast, or experiential productions Ability to calculate rigging loads and produce compliant rigging and power documentation Experience reading and producing lighting plots, AV system drawings, and stage layouts Strong understanding of venue technical requirements, permitting, and submission processes Exceptional attention to detail — your specs are what crews build from Strong communicator who can work closely with designers, vendors, and production teams Comfortable traveling domestically and internationally to support productions This role reports directly to the Head of Production.
