- Full-time Job Summary The Lighting & Service Technician plays a key role in supporting our Production, Installation, and service departments while working directly under the leadership of the Lighting & Service Director.
This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys working both in the shop and in the field, supporting live events, permanent installations, and the maintenance of professional entertainment lighting systems. Primary responsibilities include preparing, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, programming, and deploying professional lighting equipment used in live events, theatrical productions, and permanent installations. The Lighting & Service Technician will support client-owned systems as well as TPI's rental and production inventory, ensuring equipment is properly maintained, tested, and ready for deployment. In addition to repair shop responsibilities, this role will assist with lighting design implementation, event load-ins and load-outs, system commissioning, console programming, warehouse operations, inventory management, and on-site technical support. The technician will travel to job sites to assist with productions, equipment installations, preventative maintenance, service calls, and customer training as needed. This position also supports service department by diagnosing equipment failures, coordinating warranty repairs with manufacturers, managing repair documentation, maintaining replacement parts inventory, and ensuring repairs are completed efficiently and to manufacturer specifications. The ideal candidate is organized, mechanically inclined, eager to learn, and passionate about live entertainment technology. Duties Prepare, test, maintain, and deploy lighting equipment for live events, theatrical productions, and permanent installations. Assist with event load-ins, system setup, programming, operation, troubleshooting, and loadouts as required. Support permanent lighting installations, system commissioning, customer training, and on-site service work. Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair moving lights, LED fixtures, lighting consoles, dimming systems, control systems, and related entertainment technology equipment. Perform warranty and non-warranty repairs in accordance with manufacturer specifications and industry best practices. Test, calibrate, and verify equipment performance before returning equipment to clients or placing it back into rental inventory. Coordinate with manufacturers and vendors regarding warranty claims, technical support, and replacement parts. Maintain organized repair records, work orders, and service documentation. Manage replacement parts inventory and assist with maintaining adequate stock levels. Perform preventative maintenance on TPI rental inventory and client-owned equipment. Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance to clients both remotely and on-site. Perform local and occasional out-of-town service calls, installations, productions, and preventative maintenance visits. Assist with warehouse organization, lighting inventory management, equipment preparation, and quality control. Follow safe work practices while maintaining a clean, organized, and professional work environment. Maintain a positive, solution-oriented attitude and demonstrate a commitment to TPI's Guiding Principles.
Required Qualifications:
Technical knowledge of lighting systems and components, electronics repair, or a related technical field. Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and diagnostic skills with exceptional attention to detail. Ability to assess equipment issues, determine cost-effective repair solutions, perform repairs or component replacements, and test equipment to ensure proper operation. Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment such as multimeters. Experience setting up/ tearing down lighting equipment in an event/installation setting. Experience with soldering, low-voltage cable termination. Knowledge of lighting consoles (e.g., ETC EOS, GrandMA, Hog, ChamSys). Familiarity with lighting control systems like DMX, RDM, SACN, and ArtNet. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to provide technical support both in person and remotely while clearly communicating repair recommendations, estimated costs, and preventative maintenance suggestions for client-owned equipment. Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Suite. Comfortable working at heights and in warehouse, shop, and job-site environments. Ability to lift and move equipment weighing 50 pounds or more and perform physical tasks involving standing, bending, climbing, and fine motor work. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record and the ability to travel locally as required.
Prefered Qualifications:
2 years of prior experience repairing moving/static lighting fixtures (e.g., Elation, Astera, Chauvet, ETC, High End Systems). A certificate from a moving light manufacturing company (i.e., Elation, Chauvet, ETC, Robe, High End, Vari-Lite, Martin, etc.) Experience with IP-rated lighting equipment and performing IP tests. Experience with ETC architectural control systems, including Paradigm, Mosaic, and Echo. Experience troubleshooting and repairing A/V equipment and rigging systems (e.g., chain motors, automated hoists). Prior work in an authorized warranty repair center or similar environment. Proficiency with repair ticketing systems and inventory management software. Experience coordinating shipping & receiving logistics. Why Join TPI?
