Full-Time Posting Detail Information Position Summary The Center for the Arts (CFA) at the University at Buffalo, part of the College of Arts and Sciences , is seeking a Stage Operations Technician to join our team. This hands-on position offers variety, creativity, and opportunities for professional growth while supporting a wide range of performances and events in our theatre spaces. Our work spans national tours, academic productions, campus programs, and community events - offering something new each day in a collaborative and team-oriented environment.

The Stage Operations Technician plays an important role leading stage crew during load-ins, rehearsals, and performances; supporting staging and theatrical systems; and helping ensure safe, organized, and efficient venues. In collaboration with the Technical Director and production team, this position supports fly system operation, staging logistics, and ongoing venue maintenance.

We are especially interested in candidates who are curious about how productions come together - individuals who enjoy understanding how systems and hardware work and contributing to thoughtful, well-executed productions. Beyond show support, this role provides opportunities to mentor students, participate in creative problem-solving, and develop skills across technical areas, including rigging, audio and video projection support. The CFA is committed to professional development and provides training and support toward industry-recognized certifications and safety credentials. Key responsibilities include:
Lead stage crews during load-ins, rehearsals, and performances Oversee staging operations ensuring venue and equipment safety in accordance with university and industry standards Operate fly rail systems and support rigging, scenic, and soft goods installation Participate in inspections, maintenance, and improvements of stage and theatrical systems Contribute to scenic construction and installation as needed Mentor and support student employees and overhire crews in safe and effective production practices Promote and maintain a safe, inclusive, and respectful work environment Contribute to a collaborative team culture while continuing to build technical skills through hands-on experience and professional development Learn more: Our benefits , where we prioritize your well-being and success to enhance every aspect of your life. Minimum Qualifications Associate's degree in technical theater or a related field, OR an equivalent combination of education and professional experience in lieu of a degree Two years of professional experience in stagehand work, technical theater, or live event production (including staging, rigging support, or head carpentry) Foundational knowledge of staging systems, fly rail operation, or scenic carpentry, with a strong emphasis on safety Working understanding of technical theater, touring productions, and current industry safety standards Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage diverse teams Demonstrated commitment to collaboration, inclusion, and high-quality service Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in technical theater or a related field Experience leading professional and student crews in a multi-venue or academic setting. Knowledge of fall protection, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe operation of mobile elevated work platforms Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., Vectorworks) Advanced safety certifications (e.g., OSHA-30, ETCP Rigger - Theater) Experience with scenic construction, carpentry, or welding Physical Demands Must be able to move, transport, or position materials weighing up to 50 pounds, ascend/descend and work atop elevated locations, and safely operate mobile elevated work platforms.
