The Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine & Head Athletic Trainer serves as the University's chief healthcare professional for student-athletes and provides strategic oversight of all sports medicine operations. This position is responsible for the leadership, direction, and administration of athletic healthcare services, ensuring the safety, well-being, and holistic health of student/athletes while maintaining full compliance with NCAA Division II, conference, and University standards. Reporting directly to the Director of Athletics, this role blends clinical expertise, administrative leadership, and institutional collaboration, making it ideal for a highly motivated professional seeking to advance a progressive and comprehensive sports medicine program. Student-Athlete Health & Safety Direct the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries and illnesses. Make independent medical decisions in the best interest of student-athlete health and well-being. Develop, implement, and maintain evidence-based policies and protocols aligned with NCAA legislation, NATA standards, and team physician requirements. Medical Oversight & Compliance Ensure full compliance with NCAA health and safety legislation, including concussion management, drug testing coordination, and catastrophic injury coverage. Maintain accurate, confidential medical records in compliance with HIPAA regulations. Compile and report injury, treatment, and concussion data using appropriate medical documentation systems. Monitor OSHA compliance and ensure athletic training facilities meet all safety standards Risk Management & Emergency Preparedness Lead the development and implementation of risk management policies and emergency action plans (EAP). Oversee environmental safety monitoring (heat, air quality, hydration, water, and facility conditions). Coordinate CPR, AED, First Aid, and concussion education certifications for coaches and staff. Develop and implement a mental health recognition and referral plan in alignment with university standards Insurance & Medical Provider Relations Oversee procurement, renewal, and administration of the University's athletic insurance programs, including primary, secondary, and catastrophic coverage. Serve as the primary liaison between insurance carriers, healthcare providers, team physicians, and student-athletes. Manage insurance claims, billing coordination, and reimbursement tracking related to athletic injuries. Build and maintain strong partnerships with physicians, hospitals, and the local medical community University Collaboration & Engagement Schedule and supervise pre-participation physical examinations for all student-athletes. Collaborate with campus partners to ensure integrated care for student-athletes. Support Athletics Department initiatives that enhance visibility, storytelling, and brand engagement. Communicate proactively with athletic administration regarding program updates, concerns, and opportunities for improvementRequirements:
Minimum qualifications include a Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education, NATA certification as an Athletic Trainer, and a minimum of three (3) years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specific to this position. Excellent communication and computer skills required. Must have or obtain AED/CPR certification, and be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Preferred qualifications include five (5) years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specific to this position.Additional Information:
