SummaryThe Placer County Reporter covers the people, issues, and publicdecisions shaping one of California's fastest-growing regions. Throughcommunity-centered reporting and public-service journalism, this positionprovides coverage of local government, housing, growth and development,infrastructure, education, and economic issues affecting Placer Countyresidents. Our ideal team player builds trusted relationships throughout thecommunity, identifies stories that matter to residents, and delivers timely, accurate,and impactful journalism that informs and engages the public across Abridged'sdigital, newsletter, and multimedia platforms.

EssentialFunctionsIndependently identifies, develops, prioritizes, andexecutes original enterprise and breaking news stories covering Placer Countycommunities, including Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Auburn, and surroundingareas, with a focus on issues affecting residents.

Produces regular news stories, features, andexplanatory pieces for Abridged, exercising professional editorial judgment indetermining story angles, sources, reporting methods, and presentation.

Establishes andmaintains a consistent reporting presence throughout Placer County throughattendance at public meetings, community events, neighborhood gatherings, anddirect engagement with residents.

Covers localgovernment, housing, growth and development, infrastructure, education,economic trends, and other issues shaping the region's future. Developsand maintains a broad network of sources, including residents, communityleaders, educators, business owners, elected officials, public agencies,advocacy groups, and subject matter experts.

Conducts accountability and enterprise reporting through interviews,public records requests, independent research, and analysis of public documentsand data.

Reviews budgets, planning documents, development proposals, publicrecords, and government reports to identify trends, impacts, and emergingstories.

Collaborates with editors, visual journalists, and multimedia staff todevelop cross-platform storytelling initiatives, including multimedia anddata-driven coverage.

Contributes to editorial planning and pitches story ideas that reflectgenuine community information needs and underserved perspectives.

Coordinates with other Abridged reporters on regional issues,cross-county trends, and collaborative reporting projects.

Performs otherduties as assigned.

QualificationsMustbe mission-driven and passionate about the role of public media.

Proficiencyin Microsoft Office Suite.

Proficiencyin technology and software to enhance efficiency in editing, newsroommanagement, database organization, and analytics.

Clear,open, and proactive communication skills.

Highlyorganized and detail-oriented with the ability to multitask, prioritize, andmanage time effectively to meet deadlines.

Collaborativeand works effectively with diverse stakeholders as a team.

Positivelyand professionally represents PBS KVIE and Abridged throughout the community,and in forums and events related to news and information.

Demonstratedability to build trust and develop productive relationships with sources acrossdiverse communities.

Strongnews judgment and ability to identify meaningful stories through communityengagement, observation, and source development.

Abilityto communicate complex public policy, development, infrastructure, housing, andcommunity issues clearly to diverse audiences.

Experienceutilizing public records laws, investigative reporting techniques, and dataanalysis tools.

Abilityto work independently, manage a beat with minimal day-to-day direction, andconsistently generate original story ideas. Education/ExperienceBA/BSdegree in Journalism, Communications, Political Science, Public Affairs,English, or related field; equivalent experience considered.

Minimum3 - 5 years of professional journalism experience covering local government, communityaffairs, public policy, regional news, and related beats.

Experiencecovering California communities, local government, education, housing,development, or growth-related issues preferred.

Familiaritywith Placer County or demonstrated ability to quickly develop expertise andstrong community connections preferred. SpecialConditionsMusthave a valid California driver's license and meet insurance standards.

Availableto work evenings and weekends as needed.

Localtravel required.
