Job Description

Summary:
The San Diego Union-Tribune is looking for a reporter to cover homelessness and provide occasional general-assignment reporting. We are looking for a versatile journalist who will bring insight, perspective, and depth to a topic that is of special interest to our audience. The successful candidate must be able to juggle aggressive beat work and occasional breaking news while bringing an enterprise approach to the coverage, focusing on deeply reported, high-impact journalism.

What you will do:

Provide impactful enterprise stories and daily news reports for prominent display in print and on digital platformsBuild a network of sourcesDemonstrate versatility, as stories may touch on a variety of topicsWrite on deadline in a fast-paced environment; speed and accuracy are criticalPitch story ideas on a regular basisMaintain communication with a supervising editorUnderstand and use company-provided hardware, software, and cloud-based equipment and systems for company business and tasksContribute to a positive culture of teamwork and collaborationPitch in on some weekend/holiday metro reporting shiftsWhat you will bring:

A minimum of three years of journalism experience and a degree or equivalentAbility to simplify complex subjects in a clear, engaging wayCommand of various journalistic writing forms, including narrative and explanatory, with solid news judgment and fluency in styleCapable of working cooperatively and adaptively in a team settingProven ability to juggle multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environmentCommitment to the fundamentals of journalism: fairness, accuracy, and accessibilityStrong interpersonal, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills and an ability to work with people at all levels and across departments and divisionsThe skill to mine human sources, documents, and data
Benefits and Compensation:
The hourly range is $31.25 - $33.17 + cell stipend. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility).
