Job Description

Job SummaryWashington, D.C., multimedia news organization seeks a breaking news reporter/editor who can identify breaking news and quickly file accurate, well-structured stories with engaging SEO headlines. The ideal candidate should have experience in a fast-paced news environment and the ability to work independently or with minimal editing. The candidate should also be familiar with how to find breaking news on social media and on major and niche news outlets. The candidate should have superior news judgment, edit stories with speed and precision, supervise the daily news report, and be confident in making deadline decisions.

The ideal candidate should also be able to produce multimedia content for the justthenews.com site and have a keen understanding of what is news, from must-have to off-beat, to help maximize "traffic" to the site. Such candidates should also have a good sense of how to aggregate a mix of original-source, must-have and off-beat stories that resonate with the outlet's readership. ResponsibilitiesFormulation of strong headlines that maximize the impact and reach of each article.

Work with the social media and video teams to maximize the multimedia aspects of each article and maximize audience reach.

Ensure each story has the most compelling embedded SEO to maximize discovery of content on search platforms.

Fulfill other news duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QualificationsMust be a skilled journalist and breaking news writer, with a minimum of five (5) years of experience in breaking news.

Dedication to perfect grammar and word choiceVoracious appetite for news from both legacy and new media sourcesActive, creative assignment editor, with a well-honed instinct for news neglected by establishment media Experience fielding, prioritizing high-volume copy intake under deadline pressureA strong understanding of news writing, journalistic integrity, and story structureTime Management SkillsInterpersonal SkillsMust be able to multitaskAbility to collaborate with a large teamAbility to coordinate with remote employeesMust have a relentless commitment to accuracy, precision, fairness, and balance.

Must have a strong sense of what makes a compelling breaking news headline.

Must have a strong eye for the most compelling quotes and newsworthy sound bites within a news talk program.

Familiarity with editing software Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, After Effects, and Audition is desirableBenefits
