Job Description

The Hawai'i Journalism Initiative is a growing Maui-based nonprofit producing in-depth news and features about critical and interesting topics to the three major islands of Maui, Lāna'i and Moloka'i that make up Maui County. The newsroom is seeking an experienced, versatile and passionate full-time journalist to produce hard-hitting and compelling stories about a variety of issues and topics important to the residents and visitors of the islands. Candidates should have an understanding about Maui County and the Hawaiian Islands, a desire to empower communities through reporting and storytelling, and a determination to hold leaders accountable. This is not an entry level position. While we cover some major breaking news, we primarily produce stories that take time to report, research and write. The average production is 2 to 3 stories per week.

  • Be proficient in AP style and Wordpress
  • Be proficient in social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X)
  • Be adequate at photography. (Video skills are a plus)
  • Live on Maui or be willing to relocate The Hawaiʻi Journalism Initiative offers competitive salaries and full benefits, which include medical, dental and vision coverage, paid vacation time and sick leave.
Starting pay is based on experience. The Hawai'i Journalism Initiative also is looking for freelancers. Compensation is paid per story, with the amount based on the difficulty and time required.
