Job Description

The Maine Trust for Local News/Portland Press Herald is an innovative and award-winning media organization whose core mission is connecting us with the people within our communities.

We're seeking a dynamic and energetic sports journalist who excels at story development, from breaking news, in-depth stories and video work, to join our Varsity Maine team.

If you are a passionate and accomplished reporter with excellent news judgment, we'd like to hear from you.

Portland is a tremendous sports market, with avid high school sports fans, as well as several pro and collegiate teams. Our ideal candidate is a curious and knowledgeable reporter who is good at asking questions and telling stories that reach beyond the core fans.

All of the coverage
  • which focuses heavily on the people and trends in Maine high school sports
  • should be done with balance, accuracy and speed, with an eye toward informing, enlightening and entertaining.
We need exclusive and impactful storytelling that grows our audience.

Furthermore, we seek someone who isn't afraid to ask themselves before writing a story: Is this something our audience would pay for?

The ideal candidate will have
  • Video-related skills or the desire to learn and embrace video production workflow
  • Experience in breaking news and enterprise coverage
  • A sense of urgency to beat the competition on developing news
  • Comfort with a digital-first environment
  • A proven ability to file stories on deadline and experience rounding out stories with depth and context.
Applicants must also be willing to work nights and weekends. We are an equal-opportunity employer. Applicants should email a cover letter, resume and up to five writing samples to Sports Editor Bill Stewart at: bstewart@metln.org
