Multimedia Journalist The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a talented, versatile, and proactive Multimedia Journalist to join our communications team. Availability:
Must be available to act as a public information liaison for media inquiries, including conducting on-camera interviews and appearances.
Flexibility:
This position requires the flexibility to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as breaking news or project milestones dictate.
Environment:
Assignments will involve field reporting in various outdoor weather and traffic conditions.
Remote Work Eligibility:
This is an in-office position for the first six months. After successful completion of the initial six months, the position is eligible for a hybrid schedule (up to two days per week remote), subject to supervisor approval. Key Responsibilities As a Multimedia Journalist, your daily duties will include:
Story Development:
Research, pitch, and develop original story ideas across various media platforms, including drafting content for press releases.
Content Creation:
Write, edit, and produce clear, accurate, and engaging news and feature content.
Visual Storytelling:
Capture high-quality photography, video, and interviews to accompany stories, enrich press packages, and elevate social media.
Collaboration:
Partner with UDOT employees across all divisions to uncover and elevate stories that highlight the people, innovation, and dedication behind building and maintaining Utah's transportation infrastructure.
Industry Awareness:
Stay current on local news, emerging media trends, and transportation-specific issues. Qualifications To be considered for this position, candidates must possess: Proven, professional video production and photography experience. Deep familiarity with all stages of media production (pre-production, production, and post-production) across multiple platforms. Experience utilizing digital publishing and content management platforms. Preferred Qualifications Our ideal candidate is someone who possess: A Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field; OR at least 6 years of professional experience in journalism, photo/video journalism, or video production. Proven experience in live reporting or professional on-camera presentations. Previous employment within a state agency or the transportation industry. Experience planning, preparing for, and supporting high-profile press events. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities In order to be successful, the following are essential: Exceptional writing, storytelling, and copy-editing skills. High proficiency with industry-standard video editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro) and digital photography tools. Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and deliver under tight deadlines. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with diverse teams and state agencies. Familiarity with drone photography/videography (FAA Part 107 certification is a plus) or other emerging media technologies.
