Job Description

General Assignment ReporterThe Federal Way Mirror in Federal Way, WA, is seeking an energetic, curious and community-minded reporter to cover local news, government, schools, business, public safety and community events in South King County.

This is an ideal opportunity for an early-career journalist who enjoys meeting people, digging into issues that matter, and telling compelling stories across print, digital and social platforms.

What You'll DoReport and write accurate, engaging news and feature stories on deadline.

Attend and cover city meetings, community events, press conferences and breaking news.

Develop story ideas and cultivate sources throughout the community.

Conduct interviews and research to ensure fairness, accuracy and context.

Take photos and capture video to accompany stories.

Post stories, photos and updates to digital and social media platforms.

Collaborate with editors and fellow journalists on coverage priorities and special projects.

QualificationsBachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.1-2 years of reporting experience preferred; strong internship experience will be considered.

Excellent writing, reporting and interviewing skills.

Familiarity with Associated Press style.

Strong news judgment and attention to detail.

Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Comfortable using digital publishing tools, social media and multimedia storytelling techniques.

RequirementsValid driver's license, reliable transportation and current vehicle insurance.

Ability to attend meetings and events as needed.

ScheduleThis is a full-time position, typically 40 hours per week. Because news doesn't always happen during business hours, occasional evening and weekend work is required. Pay range is $19-$20/hour based on experience.
