Emerald Coast Theatre Company (ECTC) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Technical Coordinator to join our dynamic team. As the Technical Coordinator, you will be responsible for working alongside our Resident Scenic Designer in overseeing, coordinating, and executing all technical and build aspects of our productions, ensuring the highest standards of technical excellence and safety. You will collaborate closely with the artistic team, designers, and production staff, and independent contractors to bring our artistic vision to life. This is a key role within our organization, requiring strong technical expertise, leadership abilities, and a passion for the performing arts. RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Production Coordination:
Discusses and understands the show concepts with the designer and/or Technical Director. Assists in the planning and supervising the construction, load-in, tech, run, changeover and strike of all productions. Assists the Production Manager and Company Manager in determining allocation of duties for other scene shop crew members Research and source appropriate materials for scenic construction and show-specific needs. Coordinate purchasing of lumber, hardware, fabrics, and specialty items through approved vendors. Drive company work van to transport materials, equipment and scenic pieces Order general supplies (batteries, gaff tape, tie line, etc.) Track order status, delivery timelines, and resolve delays or discrepancies with suppliers. Work with the Production Manager to maintain accurate records of purchases, receipts, and budget expenditures. Maintains SDS sheets on all necessary products purchased for the scene shop. Maintain an organized digital archive of drawing sets for reference and reuse. Collaborate with the Technical Director and production management to forecast material needs across multiple shows and projects. As needed develop precise and comprehensive 2D and/or 3D drafting for scenic construction based on designer renderings and production needs. Works with the designer and/or Technical Director to establish and work within the scene shop budgets in materials and labor. Work with the scene shop supervisor to manage scene shop inventory by organizing stock, monitoring usage, and initiating timely restocking. Revise drawings as needed to incorporate feedback, engineering changes, or design modifications. Assist Stage Manager in maintaining a safe rehearsal and performance space. Fabrication & Technical:
Lead builds for all shows alongside our part-time carpenter and independent contractors. Articulates scenic engineering to scenic shop staff, independent contractors and students. Collaborate closely with scenic designers, the Technical Director, and shop persons to ensure designs are buildable, budget-conscious, and meet safety standards. Perform regular quality checks throughout the build process to verify structural integrity, finish consistency, and dimensional accuracy. Uphold standards of professional-grade theatrical construction, including finish techniques, joinery, weld quality, and material selection. Assist with generation of fabrication drawings including material callouts, construction techniques, hardware specifications, and assembly instructions. The servicing and maintenance or coordinating servicing and maintenance of scene shop equipment. Constructs scenery with an understanding of working drawings/elevations, cut lists, and various construction methods (welding, adhesives, foams, etc.) Leads and supervises rigging scenery-related items into ECTC facilities. Ensure safe and efficient storage of materials, including flammables and heavy stock, following workplace safety standards. Maintains a safe, healthy, and clean work/shop environment. Lighting Maintenance and Load-In:
ECTC has a rep plot that typically requires a hang and focus of 6-10 fixtures per show. Act as or oversee the Master Electrician executing necessary adjustments for each show; hanging and circuiting the lighting units according to the plot, assist with focus, and wire any practicals or scenic pieces that include lighting units. Coordinate the setup, operation, and maintenance of lighting equipment during rehearsals and performances both on site and off. Training & Cultural Engagement:
Assist with supervising and training NWFLSC students and interns in the scenery production lab classes. Foster a positive and collaborative working environment, maintains a safe and welcoming working environment Space Maintenance:
Maintain and supervise the organization of the shop, offsite storage, and sound and lighting shop Willingness to assist and help supervise theatre cleanliness: sweep, dust, clean, take out trash Assist and oversee with any space upgrades or projects to enhance the patron's theatre experience Special Events:
Assist with any on or off site ECTC fundraisers, productions, or events as needed. WORK CONDITIONS
Ability to work weekends, evenings and work with a flexible schedule. Must be willing to work at heights, around moving machinery, and with exposure to noise, vibration, and dust. Must be willing to travel and work at various sites. Must be willing to work outdoors while using the appropriate safety procedures. Ability to work safely in an environment containing potentially hazardous electrical equipment, fumes, vapor, gasses, and/or materials. EXPECTATIONS
The Technical Coordinator can expect to work on average 40+ hours/week. Hours are variable, nights and weekends are expected. Weeks that include load in and tech weeks will require additional hours. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, sit, kneel, and lay or move freely through the building and in outdoor areas. The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors or Masters of Fine Arts degree in Technical Theatre, Theatre Production, or a related field (or 2-5 years equivalent professional experience in a similar position). Strong computer skills. Proficiency in the use of industry-standard software and equipment related to technical theatre. Working knowledge of scenery and structural design, rigging, automation, engineering, and construction process and styles, elements and practices - i.e. proscenium, thrust, arena, black box; wood, metal, plastic, adhesives; construction, painting, purchasing, etc. Knowledge of theatrical physics, electricity, modern construction practices and materials, and stage crafts including rigging, and stage carpentry. Use power and hand tools accurately and effectively. Ability to work productively and meet deadlines. Ability to run large crews with various skill sets. Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple projects and prioritize effectively. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams. Attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality work. Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and production demands. COMPENSATION
$55,000 - $60,000 salary and benefits combined. Benefits include employer-paid health insurance, PTO, and holiday pay (estimated $8,000+). A 401(k) plan, vision and dental insurance, and dependent health insurance are available, with premiums paid by the employee. APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
