Department Information The Department of Theatre and Dance at Georgia College & State University offers a dynamic, student-centered program grounded in both performance and production. Located in Milledgeville, Georgia, the department provides hands-on learning opportunities through a broad season of plays, musicals, and dance concerts. Job Summary The Department of Theatre and Dance at Georgia College and State University (GCSU) invites applications for a position as Technical Director to begin August 1, 2026. The Technical Director is a key member of the production team, responsible for overseeing scenic production, managing rheatre and dance facilities, and collaborating with faculty, designers, students, and guest artists to realize artistic vision. This position requires strong leadership, expertise in scenic construction, and demonstrated experience in creative problem-solving within a highly collaborative academic environment. The Technical Director provides instruction and training to the students on carpentry skills, and the areas mentioned below. The department is committed to developing a variety of faculty, staff, and student body within the College of Arts and Sciences, and to supporting faculty, staff, and students within the College of Arts and Sciences and to fostering a campus community that encourages academic excellence and effective teaching. The technical Director of Theatre and Dance is responsible for managing, supervising, and overseeing all technical aspects of the Theatre Department which has a Theatre Major and Minor, and a Minor in Dance. This position will work in an environment of artistic and academic excellence at one of the nation's top public liberal arts universities. This position is responsible for supporting the artistic vision of directors and designers as it relates to the budgeting, scheduling construction, and realization of set, lighting, projection, and sound designs. Responsibilities Management
  • 25•Works with designers, directors, and production management to manage and maximize the artistic and educational impact of department resources.
  • Assists students to conceptualize their set designs.
  • Assesses construction needs, generates construction drawings and paperwork, creates materials and labor estimates in time and cost and maintains inventory reports.
  • Works with Physical Plant on maintenance and repair of equipment, safety management, and safety inspection of tools and equipment. Trains
  • 20•Trains and supervises staff and students in the preparation, load-in, and maintenance of shows.
Maintenance
  • 20•Maintains a clear understanding of all aspects of production in order to facilitate scenic, lighting, projections, and sound needs, rehearsal, technical rehearsal, running and closing/strike of each production and special event.
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment in the scene shop and performance spaces, including marley floors.
  • Provides training on facilities and equipment.
  • Maintains records.
  • Completes incident reports as needed.
  • Maintains regular inspection with Physical Plant of hazardous materials, lamps, lighting instruments, dimmers, wiring, sound system, mechanical work including rigging, winches, draperies and masking, and house systems. Organization
  • 20•Organizes and administers the implementation of the shop calendar.
  • Follows through on design deadlines.
  • Scheduling and coordinating staff.
  • Coordinates and supervises the construction of all scenic elements for each production. Communication

Required Qualifications Educational Requirements
  • B.A. in Theatre or related area of expertise
  • 3 years of experience in an educational or professional theatre setting or related field of experience. Other Required Qualifications
  • At least 2 years of technical theatre experience (professional and/or collegiate)
  • Evening and/or weekend work will be required.
  • Experience in scenic construction and crew leadership
  • Working knowledge of CAD software, Vectorworks, or other drafting programs
  • Familiarity with lighting, audio, projections, and theatrical rigging
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs, work at heights, and operate shop equipment
  • Valid driver's license (or ability to obtain one) Preferred Qualifications Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced skills in scenic carpentry, welding, or metalworking.
  • Experience in theatrical design (scenic, lighting, sound, or projections).
  • Background in higher education or student mentorship.
  • Knowledge of emerging production technologies (projection, digital audio, etc).
Candidate will be able to:
1.Provide a safe, hands-on learning experience for students enrolled in theatre & dance practicum courses within the GCSU Department of Theatre & Dance by instructing them in technical theatre practices and safety procedures related to scenic construction. 2.Participate in the hiring, assignment, and overseeing of tasks to student assistants and crews, supervises the safe operation of shop equipment (including power saws, table saws, radial arm saws, and welding tools), and evaluates student work in coordination with faculty. 3.Ensure the timely production of scenery for theatre and dance performances by determining material needs, tools and equipment, fabrication processes, and production timelines necessary to meet departmental schedules. 4.Direct the daily operations of the scene shop by planning and organizing construction projects using technical drawings, renderings, and verbal or conceptual instructions and implements preventative maintenance practices to ensure the safe and efficient operation of all shop tools and equipment. 5.Support productions across theatre & dance by leading and organizing load-in, installation, rigging, strike, and storage of scenic elements in performance spaces including the proscenium theatre, black box theatre, and dance studios. 6.Contribute to the development of scenic designs by offering construction-based insight, technical advisement, and collaborative input throughout the design and production process. 7.Contribute to the broader mission of the department by supporting theatre productions, dance initiatives, and the community dance program, and by performing additional duties as assigned. Proposed Salary This position is a pay grade 7. The available salary range is $40,729.00 to $59,068.00 . Starting salary within this range is based on relevant years of experience.
