Job Summary :
NAES is seeking a Technical Writer to support documentation efforts at a plant in Alabama. This is an on-site, contract to hire position focused on developing, updating, and validating technical procedures and documentation for plant systems and equipment. The Technical Writer will work closely with plant personnel, engineers, and project teams to ensure procedures are accurate, clear, and aligned with operational and safety standards. This role requires a hands-on approach, including field walkdowns and direct interaction with plant systems to verify documentation against real-world conditions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Develop and update technical procedures including startup, shutdown, operating, and maintenance instructions Review and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, and system documentation to support procedure development Perform field walkdowns to validate procedures against installed equipment and systems Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to gather and verify technical information Ensure documentation meets client standards, formatting guidelines, and revision control requirements Organize and maintain technical documentation libraries and revision histories Incorporate markups, redlines, and feedback into finalized documents
Job Requirements :
Strong understanding of power plant systems or heavy industrial equipment Experience with line by line sketches of power plant systems including all components and instrumentation required Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics (P&IDs, electrical diagrams, etc.) Experience writing clear, concise technical procedures for operations or maintenance Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple documents and revisions Effective communication skills for working with cross-functional teams on-site Ability to work independently in a plant environment Education /
Experience :
High School Diploma or GED required 2+ years of technical writing experience in power generation or heavy industrial settings 2+ years of operations, maintenance, or engineering support experience preferred Military experience (especially Navy nuclear) is a plus Experience with AutoCAD or technical drawing tools is a plus
