EHSS Technical Writer Job Description The EHSS Technical Writer develops clear, accurate, and engaging documentation to support Environment, Health, Safety, and Security (EHSS) programs. This role creates standards, skill checks, self-assessments, job aids, and other technical materials for non-technical users, working both independently and as part of a small global team. The EHSS Technical Writer ensures all content is consistent, easy to understand, and aligned with organizational requirements. Responsibilities Develop and maintain Environment, Health, Safety, and Security (EHSS) standards, skill checks, self-assessments, job aids, and other technical documents for professional use. Create clear, concise, and logically structured content that maximizes reader comprehension, especially for non-technical users. Develop and follow style guides to ensure consistency, clarity, and efficiency across all documentation. Meet and consult with subject matter experts (SMEs) to gather, analyze, and validate information for new and existing content. Analyze information and requirements to develop or update policies, procedures, and form documentation. Review, copyedit, and refine content created by other team members to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to standards. Maintain and organize a document library to ensure current, accessible, and properly version-controlled documentation. Check all technical material for consistency, accuracy, and alignment with established standards and guidelines. Generate innovative ideas for content structure, presentation, and workflow solutions to improve documentation quality and usability. Create process descriptions and simple process or flow diagrams to clearly explain key activities and workflows. Manage multiple documentation projects simultaneously, including creating trackers and providing regular status updates to stakeholders. Prioritize and execute tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines and handling frequent interruptions. Continuously build knowledge of new systems, technologies, and methods relevant to EHSS documentation and technical writing. Collaborate with a small global team while also working independently with minimal supervision. Demonstrate professionalism and composure in stressful situations and when working under tight deadlines. Essential Skills One to two (1-2) years of experience creating content such as manuals, guides, and instruction documents for non-technical users in a professional setting. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Strong technical writing skills with the ability to produce clear, concise, and structured documentation. Ability to develop and follow style guides to ensure consistency across all written materials. Exceptional analytical and conceptual thinking skills to understand complex information and translate it into user-friendly content. Ability to check all technical material for consistency, accuracy, and completeness. Excellent project management skills, including the ability to create trackers and provide updates to stakeholders. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Exceptional oral and written communication, presentation, and facilitation skills. Ability to describe key activities as simple processes or flow diagrams. Strong attention to detail, including record-keeping and proofreading skills. Strong critical thinking skills to evaluate information and make sound decisions. Ability to work independently and effectively contribute as part of a small global team. Ability to quickly learn new systems, technologies, and methods related to EHSS and documentation. Additional Skills & Qualifications Bachelor's degree in English, Communication, Business Administration, Technical Writing, or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience. Background or familiarity with engineering or technical environments is beneficial. Willingness to take on new challenges and continuously build on current skills. Fluent interpersonal communication skills to work effectively with subject matter experts and stakeholders. Demonstrated initiative and a results-oriented approach to work. Comfort with multi-tasking, managing multi-step procedures, and handling frequent workflow interruptions. Ability to prioritize tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment. Professionalism and composure in stressful situations and when working to short deadlines. Detail-oriented mindset with a high degree of accuracy in all work products. Work Environment This role operates in a fast-paced, professional environment that emphasizes accuracy, clarity, and collaboration. The EHSS Technical Writer works primarily with digital tools, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, to create, edit, and manage documentation. The position involves regular interaction with a small global team and subject matter experts, requiring clear communication across time zones and functions. Work typically involves managing multiple concurrent projects, responding to frequent interruptions, and meeting tight deadlines while maintaining high standards of quality and professionalism. Attire aligns with a standard professional office setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Johnston, IA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $21.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
