The Sampson Independent is seeking a full-time versatile, deadline-driven Content Writer to join our editorial team. The ideal candidate is a storyteller at heart with a sharp eye for detail and the ability to pivot between hard news reporting and engaging feature writing. You will be responsible for producing high-quality, accurate, and compelling content for both our print edition and our digital platforms. You'll be tackling other areas including local politics, breaking news, community events, and features. Cover breaking news, local government meetings, and public safety alerts with speed and accuracy. Develop a network of reliable contacts within the community, including officials and local experts, to ensure "first-to-report" capability. Use descriptive language and narrative arcs to engage readers, providing a deeper look at the personalities and events shaping our region. Help capture and translate real stories from the community into written content. Research, pitch, and write original news articles, features, and interviews. Maintain consistency in voice, tone, and messaging across platforms. Verify facts and sources to maintain the publication's integrity and high editorial standards. Collaborate with editors, photographers, and digital teams. Demonstrate a strong commitment to the community. Do I Have What It Takes? Exceptional reporting and writing skills. Social media and photography skills are a plus for this position. A journalism degree is preferred but not required. Proficiency in AP Style. Strong interviewing skills and the ability to build rapport with diverse sources. Experience with Content Management Systems (CMS) like WordPress Ability to work under tight deadlines.
