The BayNet, Southern Maryland's trusted news source, is seeking a motivated Political News Writer to join our growing newsroom. This is a contract-based position to start, ideal for a writer eager to cover national and state politics, government meetings, elections, legislation, and public affairs. Message From Our Editor Hi, I'm Katie Callander, and I've been with The BayNet since June 2022. I started as a part-time graphic designer and quickly discovered a passion for journalism and storytelling through this incredible team. Today, as Editor, I'm proud to help lead a newsroom focused on delivering impactful local coverage to our readers. We're currently expanding our political coverage and looking for writers who are passionate about government accountability, public policy, elections, and community leadership. Whether your interests include county government, school boards, state politics, investigative reporting, or campaign coverage, we'd love to hear from you. Our newsroom is supportive, fast-paced, and committed to helping writers grow while producing journalism that serves Southern Maryland. What You'll Do
  • Cover regional political news, government meetings, elections, and public affairs
  • Write accurate, engaging, and timely news articles for digital publication
  • Conduct interviews with elected officials, candidates, community leaders, and residents
  • Research public records, legislation, and policy issues affecting Southern Maryland
  • Pitch original story ideas and investigative angles
  • Collaborate with editors to develop impactful political coverage
  • Meet deadlines in a fast-paced news environment Compensation & Expectations
  • This position is contract-based to start
  • Pay is $30 per article
  • Articles involving event coverage pay $50 per article
  • Writers in this position are expected to submit a minimum of 15 articles per week
  • Opportunity to move into a full-time position with hourly pay What We're Looking For
  • Experience in journalism, political reporting, or news writing preferred
  • Strong understanding of local, state, and national political issues
  • Familiarity with AP Style and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and manage deadlines effectively
  • Strong interviewing and research skills
  • Interest in community-focused journalism and public accountability
