Role Overview The Customs Brokerage Assistant / Entry Writer is responsible for the timely and compliant preparation of U.S. import entries and related documentation. This role involves data entry, classification (HS), valuation, origin determination, and communication with multiple stakeholders (clients, carriers, and CBP). The incumbent will help maintain auditable records, support audit readiness, and contribute to process improvements that increase efficiency and compliance. This role operates under the supervision of a licensed customs broker and within regulatory guidelines. Key Responsibilities Prepare and file U.S. import entries (entry, entry lines, and related documents) with CBP, ensuring accuracy of classification, valuation, origin, and duties/taxes Review and collect required documentation (commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading/air waybill, certificates of origin, licenses, permits, etc.) and resolve missing or ambiguous data Conduct HS classification and valuation checks; apply origin rules and origin documentation; escalate complex determinations to a senior broker Prepare and submit Importer Security Filing (ISF) where applicable; monitor filing deadlines and communicate issues to stakeholders Enter and maintain data in broker software/system; ensure data integrity, update shipment status, and generate routine compliance and management reports Coordinate clearance timelines with carriers, suppliers, and clients; monitor shipments and expedite where necessary Gather supporting documentation for responding to CBP inquiries and audit requests for the compliance officer to provide timely responses Maintain organized, auditable electronic and hard-copy records in compliance with company policy and regulatory requirements Support export filings and other regulatory requirements as needed, depending on jurisdiction and client needs Stay current with regulatory changes (CBP rules, 19 CFR parts relevant to entry procedures, tariff updates, and ISF requirements) and implement process changes accordingly Communicate effectively with clients and internal teams; provide status updates and escalate issues promptly
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Education:
Associate's degree in Logistics, International Business, Supply Chain, or related field; or equivalent work experience
Experience:
1 to 3 years in customs brokerage, freight forwarding, logistics, or related role. Entry-level candidates with strong aptitude may be considered if paired with a comprehensive training plan
Regulatory Knowledge:
Basic understanding of U.S. import clearance processes; familiarity with HS classification, valuation, and origin concepts; awareness of standard documentary requirements and ISF basics
Software and Tools:
Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); experience with broker software or ERP/TMS systems; ability to learn new systems quickly
Language:
English (excellent written and verbal communication). Additional languages are a plus
Preferred Qualifications Certifications:
CCS (Certified Customs Specialist) or similar credential, or willingness to pursue; ability to practice in the U.S. under the supervision of a licensed broker
Compliance Experience:
Exposure to CBP regulations, 19 CFR Parts relevant to entry procedures, ISF, and related compliance processes
Technical:
Experience with
ACE/CSMS, AES/ITDS
(exports), Cargowise (preferred) or other broker platforms
Soft Skills:
Strong attention to detail, problem-solving mindset, good interpersonal communication, time management, and customer service focus
Work Authorization:
Legal authorization to work in the United States U.S. Compliance Context Familiarity with CBP processes, 19 CFR Parts 141 to 149 (Entries and Entry Summaries), and related data requirements ISF (Importer Security Filing) requirements for ocean shipments to the U.S.; filing data due typically 24 hours before vessel loading (10+2 data elements). Accurate ISF data reduces penalties and delays Use of U.S.
trade systems:
ACE (Automated Commercial Environment), CSMS (Cargo Systems Messaging Service), and
AES/ITDS

Pay:
