This role is essential in supporting plumbing, sewer, water line, and HVAC-related fieldwork by operating excavation equipment for trenching, grading, and site preparation. The Operator/Excavator works closely with licensed plumbers, HVAC technicians, and supervisors to ensure underground mechanical installations and service replacements are completed efficiently and in compliance with all safety and regulatory standards. Responsibilities Operate hydraulic excavators (1.5 to 15-ton class), mini-excavators, backhoes, skid steers, and trenchers for site preparation and excavation activities. Excavate according to grade, slope, and depth specifications using trenching best practices for plumbing and HVAC utility lines. Perform digging operations in residential areas, taking care to avoid underground utilities and infrastructure. Use laser levels, transits, and other grading equipment to maintain accurate elevation and trench dimensions. Execute precision trenching around existing utilities without damaging service lines or violating clearances. Excavate and prepare sub-grade for underground installations, including bedding of pipe using appropriate fill materials. Perform proper backfilling and compaction of soil post-installation to meet structural and code requirements. Install temporary trench shoring and safety protection systems where required. Collaborate with licensed plumbers, HVAC technicians, and job site supervisors to confirm trench layout and depths before digging. Verify scope of work against job plans and ensure the excavation area is marked and clear before equipment mobilization. Communicate job progress, unexpected site conditions, or equipment issues to supervisors in a timely and professional manner. Interpret and apply locate markings provided by utility services and avoid known easements and protected areas. Ensure all digging is performed in compliance with
OSHA 1926
Subpart P (Excavations), local trench safety standards, and utility code requirements. Install proper materials into excavation site as required. Perform thorough pre-use equipment inspections and document findings. Conduct routine maintenance on equipment per manufacturer's specifications and company policy. Ensure equipment is clean, secured, and stowed in appropriate locations. Report all equipment malfunctions, near misses, and safety incidents immediately to supervisor or manager. Maintain safe job site boundaries, use proper barricades and signage, and ensure pedestrian/public safety in high-traffic or urban environments. Load, secure, and transport equipment to and from jobsites using trailers and company vehicles, when qualified. Perform manual labor including hand trenching, pipe bedding, and cleanup during low excavation periods or in tight access conditions. Support other field operations such as demolition, rough-in, and grading when excavation equipment is not in use. Debrief with dispatch after completion of every job. Maintain a professional image by wearing company-approved apparel, following safety policies, and upholding company standards of performance and code of ethics. Maintain a courteous demeanor with all customers and associates, and respect customer property. Participate in all company-sponsored training classes. Accurately document services completed, discussions with customers, and invoices/costs for service when required. Qualifications Experience operating hydraulic excavators, mini-excavators, backhoes, skid steers, and trenchers. Knowledge of trenching best practices and underground utility safety. Offered compensation:
$22/hr
