Job Description

Position Summary The Director of Environmental Services (EVS) is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and operation of the facility's housekeeping, laundry, and maintenance departments. This role ensures a clean, safe, sanitary, and well-maintained environment for residents, staff, and visitors in compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. This is a hands-on leadership role. The Director is expected to lead from the front and step in wherever needed across departments to maintain operational excellence and survey readiness. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Oversight Direct and manage daily operations of housekeeping, laundry, and maintenance departments Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate department staff Develop schedules to ensure appropriate coverage and efficiency Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and service excellence Serve as a facility-wide resource, stepping into any environmental services function as needed to ensure operations run smoothly. Housekeeping & Laundry Ensure all resident rooms, common areas, and clinical spaces meet cleanliness and infection control standards Oversee laundry operations, including proper handling, sorting, washing, and distribution of linens and personal clothing Maintain inventory of linens, supplies, and chemicals Implement quality assurance and inspection processes Step in to perform housekeeping or laundry duties during staffing shortages or high-demand periods Maintenance & Plant Operations Oversee preventative maintenance program for building systems, equipment, and grounds Ensure timely completion of work orders and repairs Maintain life safety systems (fire alarms, sprinklers, emergency systems) Coordinate with vendors and contractors as needed Provide hands-on support with repairs and maintenance tasks when needed Compliance & Safety Ensure compliance with CMS, OSHA, and state regulations Maintain readiness for surveys and inspections Lead environmental rounds and safety audits Manage infection control practices related to environmental services Maintain SDS documentation and chemical safety protocols Budget & Inventory Management Develop and manage departmental budgets Monitor expenses and identify cost-saving opportunities Order and maintain appropriate inventory levels for supplies and equipment Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree preferred Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in environmental services, preferably in a skilled nursing facility or healthcare setting Prior supervisory or management experience required Strong knowledge of housekeeping, laundry, and maintenance operations Familiarity with CMS regulations, life safety codes, and infection control standards Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills Demonstrated willingness to be hands-on and work alongside staff in all EVS functions Preferred Qualifications Experience in a skilled nursing facility or long-term care setting Certification in healthcare environmental services or maintenance (e.g., CHESP) Knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems Physical Requirements Ability to walk, stand, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs Ability to respond to emergencies and be on-call as needed
