Under the direction of the Superintendent, the Director of Student Support Services is responsible for implementing and maintaining District-wide Special Education programs conforming to district, state, and federal objectives and laws; planning, designing, and implementing all phases of programs and services provided by the Special Education staff; serving as a resource to students, parents, and staff and maintaining adequate staffing to ensure objectives of programs and services are achieved within budget.Minimum Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Special Education or related field Full approval granted from completion of a Special Education Director program, or currently working under/ability to gain temporary approval towards full approvalState of Michigan Administrator Certificate Preferred Qualifications:
Michigan Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in Special Education is preferred Five years of successful teaching experience at with special education students is preferred Experience leading or working within a Title I building is preferred Experience with Title IX compliance and coordination is preferredKnowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Advanced knowledge of federal, state and local special education rules and regulations, staff management, corrective discipline, school district, and special education finance Knowledge of and/or direct work experience with the special education programs to be supervised Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in the areas of Special Education, including emotionally impaired, cognitively impaired, learning disabled, ASD and others Conceptual understanding of human growth and development, learning theories and teaching methodologies, and special education service delivery models Ability to mediate conflict, prioritize tasks, and build relationships Ability to assume responsibility for own professional growth and development, as well as that of the staff; stay current with changing regulations, techniques, and best practicesResponsibilities:
Facilitate and support the development of Individualized Education Program process with families, students and staff Assists with the supervision and coordination of the creation and implementation of BSD operated programs and services for BSD resident students currently served in out-of-district center programs Assists with the evaluation of current special education programs and recommends changes as required Participate in the development and promotion of special education service and delivery throughout the district to ensure that individual student needs are being met Incorporates diverse perspectives and builds consensus to provide equitable, appropriate, and effective learning opportunities for every special education student to achieve Supervises the special education instructional programs and evaluates the performance of teachers; uses data about teacher practice to identify and support individual and team professional learning needs across a continuum of professional growth Builds a professional culture of trust, openness and collaboration, engaging teachers and other staff in sharing information, analyzing outcomes, and planning improvement Oversees Section 504 coordination for students and makes appropriate services available to students Develops shared understanding of and commitment to ongoing professional development to achieve high expectations for special education students Guides and supports quality professional development that results in improved teaching and learning and meets diverse learning needs for special education students Keep informed of legal requirements governing special education programs, and assure that staff and programs are in compliance with the law Supervise special education personnel in cooperation with building principals Assist with budget recommendations on established budgets for special education programs including State and Federal funding programs Assist with grant preparation from various Federal and State funding sources Coordinate and supervise summer programs for special education (ESY) Adheres to all safety and security requirements at the state and district levels Promote positive student attitudes toward school and learning Effectively promote and enforce school policy; provide discipline as needed Collaborate in an effective manner with other administrative peers Communicate effectively and consistently with the school's parent community Understand and implement all master agreements and adhere to the District's policies Conduct himself/herself in a professional manner commensurate with his/her position, and project a good public image of the School District in dealing with the community and employee groups Other duties as assignedREPORTS TO
