Job Description
Job Summary The Division of Public Safety at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Director of Technology Systems! Reporting to the Executive Director of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Public Safety, the Director of Technology Systems is responsible for the management of enterprise‑level technology platforms, including Milestone (VMS), CCURE (Access Control), and FUSUS (Situational Awareness/Integration). This role ensures the delivery of reliable, scalable, and innovative systems that support CU Boulder's mission to safeguard its people, assets, and community. The Director provides leadership in program strategy, governance, vendor and contract management, and system integration, while ensuring alignment with university priorities, IT governance standards, and DPS operational objectives. The position supervises two full‑time Systems Administrators for Public Safety and manages all contract staff, service vendors, and integrators that support the enterprise security systems environment. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be Planning and Assessment Develop and lead technology systems planning aligned with university safety, risk management, and Office of Information Technology objectives. Research and evaluate emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, analytics, and data security solutions, to enhance situational awareness and operational efficiency. Promote innovation while ensuring systems remain accessible, secure, and follows campus and federal standards. Collaborate with peer institutions and external partners to exchange standard processes and identify innovative solutions that advance the department's strategic plan. Program Management Lead technology programming efforts, including system upgrades, integrations, and expansions. Develop plans, risk assessments, and performance metrics related to system health, uptime, and collaborator satisfaction. Supervise system performance monitoring, maintenance protocols, and lifecycle management for all technology systems. Engage in Continual Service Improvement (CSI) activities to assess systems and processes, identify efficiency opportunities, and enhance overall service quality and customer experience. Develop and maintain documented system policies, procedures, and operational standards to ensure consistency, compliance, and efficiency. Supervision and Staff Development Foster a high-performing, inclusive team culture committed to technical excellence and customer service. Supervise the Systems Administrator(s) for Public Safety; provide coaching, mentorship, and professional development opportunities. Ensure staff have adequate resources, training, and support to achieve operational goals. Partner Engagement and Communication Establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external partners to enhance system effectiveness and user satisfaction. Promote collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement across communications and initiatives. Facilitate change control processes and ensure timely and effective communication to IT staff and impacted users. Serve as the unit's liaison to the Office of Information Technology, promoting standard processes, risk awareness, and security integration. What You Should Know Standard business hours, M-F. This position may be eligible for a hybrid modality.

What We Require Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Engineering, Business, or related field (A combination of education and relevant experience may substitute for the degree on a year-for-year basis). Three years of experience, with progressively increasing responsibility, in the use and development of public safety technology. Previous supervisory experience of professional staff. What You Will Need Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively across organizational boundaries. Ability to influence action in alignment with organizational priorities, including in situations without direct reporting authority. Strong capability to elicit business requirements and translate them into operationally effective solutions. Demonstrated capability to direct, motivate, develop, and evaluate staff. Experience with budget planning, justification, and reconciliation. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to translate technical issues into actionable strategies. What We Would Like You to Have Prior experience in a higher education environment. Familiarity with cloud technologies, cybersecurity, networking, regulatory requirements (FERPA, HIPAA, PCI), risk assessment frameworks (NIST), IT Service Management frameworks (ITSM/ITIL) and enterprise change management methodologies. Demonstrated experience leading complex technology projects or programs within public safety, higher education, or public sector environments. Experience in the management of any of these enterprise‑level technology platforms: Milestone (VMS), CCURE (Access Control), and FUSUS (Situational Awareness/Integration), or comparable.
