Job Description
Drafting Internship (Part Time)/ REQ # We are seeking Drafting and Design Intern to support mechanical drafting and design activities within our Kilgore, TX engineering organization. This role is intentionally structured to align with academic requirements for an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) program and provides hands-on experience applying drafting, modeling, and design principles in a real-world manufacturing environment. This role is part time with a minimum of 9 hours/week. The intern will perform mechanical drafting work under the direct supervision of a qualified engineer or designer , while contributing to active engineering and production initiatives. Key Responsibilities Mechanical Drafting & Design (Primary Requirement) Create and revise 2D mechanical drawings using AutoCAD Generate 3D models and assemblies using SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor Produce detailed engineering drawings from 3D models, including dimensions, tolerances, and bill of materials (BOMs) Support design documentation updates and drawing control processes Engineering Support & Project Work Assist engineers with design, development, and selection of basic hardware components Support prototype fabrication, testing, and documentation Contribute to tooling, fixtures, and jig design for manufacturing applications Participate in time studies and process flow analysis to improve efficiency Evaluate assembly processes and assist in developing mistake-proofing solutions (poka-yoke) Advanced Exposure Opportunities (Based on Business Needs) Assist in motion control, robotics, or automated systems projects Support 3D printing initiatives, including part design, testing, and SOP development Contribute to piping or plant layout design using Autodesk Plant 3D (if applicable) Assist in documenting assembly processes for complex systems such as antennas or structural assemblies Cross-Functional Collaboration Work with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to resolve design and production issues Support technicians and assemblers with drawing interpretation and troubleshooting Compile data and present findings to engineering leadership
YOU ARE THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THIS JOB IF YOU HAVE
Required Qualifications U.S. Citizenship required Currently enrolled in an AAS Engineering Graphics & Design or related program Basic understanding of mechanical drafting principles and drawing interpretation Familiarity with at least one CAD platform (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Inventor) Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings Strong attention to detail and organizational skills Effective communication and willingness to work in a team environment Preferred Qualifications Exposure to 3D modeling and basic design concepts Familiarity with manufacturing processes or mechanical systems Interest in 3D printing, tooling design, or process improvement Prior coursework or exposure to mechanical or industrial designProgram Structure & Supervision Part-time:
9 hours per week minimum Direct supervision by a qualified engineer or designer Structured project assignments with defined deliverables Regular feedback and performance evaluations Documented contribution to at least one engineering or process improvement project Summary presentation outlining work completed, learnings, and recommendationsSHAPING THE FUTURE THROUGH INNOVATION AND DISCOVERY!
