Immediately Job Description Driver Education Teacher FLSA Status Exempt Position Objective The Driver Education Teacher provides classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction to students enrolled in a state-approved driver education program. The teacher promotes safe, responsible, and lawful driving practices while helping students develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become safe drivers in accordance with Vermont Agency of Education requirements and Vermont motor vehicle laws. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Classroom Instruction Plan and deliver engaging driver education curriculum aligned with Vermont standards and state requirements Teach topics including: Traffic laws and regulations Defensive driving techniques Vehicle operation and maintenance Driver responsibility and decision-making Effects of alcohol, drugs, fatigue, and distracted driving Hazard recognition and risk reduction Maintain accurate attendance, grades, and instructional records Administer and evaluate classroom assignments, assessments, and examinations Establish and maintain a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment Behind-the-Wheel Instruction Provide supervised behind-the-wheel driving instruction in accordance with Vermont requirements Teach students practical driving skills, including: Vehicle control Parking Turning and lane changes Highway and rural driving Adverse weather driving Emergency response procedures Monitor student performance and provide constructive feedback Ensure all safety procedures are followed during driving instruction Inspect instructional vehicles before and after use and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly Student Support & Communication Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, school personnel, and administrators regarding student progress and concerns Encourage responsible decision-making and safe driving habits Maintain confidentiality of student records and information Program Compliance & Administration Ensure compliance with: Vermont Agency of Education regulations Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles requirements School district policies and procedures Maintain all required documentation for classroom and driving instruction hours Participate in required trainings and professional development activities Assist with scheduling driving sessions and coordinating program logistics Supervision Supervision Received Reports to the Building Principal or designated administrator. Supervisory Responsibilities May oversee or coordinate the work of support staff or volunteer assistants as assigned. Qualifications Education & Experience Bachelor's degree preferred Experience in teaching, driver training, or related instructional work preferred Experience working with adolescents preferred Certifications & Licensure Valid Vermont Professional Educator License preferred or required per district policy Vermont Driver Education Endorsement required Valid Vermont Driver's License with a safe driving record required Completion of a Vermont-approved driver education instructor training program is required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of Vermont traffic laws and driver education standards Strong classroom management and instructional skills Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in stressful or emergency situations Strong communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work effectively with students, families, and staff Basic computer proficiency and recordkeeping skills Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Ability to sit for extended periods while supervising driving instruction Ability to enter and exit vehicles frequently Ability to observe student driving performance and roadway conditions continuously Ability to communicate clearly in classroom and vehicle settings Exposure to varying weather and driving conditions Occasional evening or weekend work may be required Terms of Employment Salary and work year established by district contract or school board policy Employment subject to successful background check and driving record review Disclaimer This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed.
