Job Description
Full-time Job Summary:
The Early Literacy Coach will provide leadership in all areas of early childhood literacy, interventions, consultation and program planning for the Great Start Readiness Program. Essential Duties (May include, but not limited to): 1. Willingness to be trained in Michigan Literacy Essentials for Preschool. Willingness to be trained as a trainer for Michigan Literacy Essentials for Preschool 2. Works with GSRP in assessing needs and integrating a Multi-Tiered Systems of support for literacy. 3. Consults, counsels and collaborates with parents, school personnel, children and appropriate community agencies regarding educational literacy concerns as identified in a multi-tiered system of support. 4. Develops and models high quality literacy strategies, lessons and units for teachers of early childhood classrooms utilizing Michigan Literacy Essentials for Preschool and approved preschool curriculum and their accompanying literacy support materials. 5. Coaches one-on-one while building and maintaining confidential relationships. 6. Serves as the contact for coordinating the development and delivery of professional development for early literacy practices to research-based literacy strategies and interventions for teachers of early childhood classrooms. 7. Supports the integration of technology in effective literacy instruction. 8. Participates in school improvement activities focused on improving instructional practices as outlined by children's outcomes. 9. Participates in required trainings for Michigan ISD Birth to Five Literacy Coaches. 10. Remains knowledgeable about current research and pedagogy relevant to the coaching role. 11. Develops literacy materials for distribution to families to provide literacy supports as an extension beyond the classroom. 12. Provides training and support with implementation of a comprehensive system of literacy instruction utilizing Michigan Literacy Essentials for Preschool and approved preschool curriculum and their accompanying literacy support materials. 13. Willingness to be trained in and execute The Preschool Early Literacy Indicators (PELI), an assessment for 3- to 5-year-olds designed to measure pre-literacy and oral language skills. 14. Analyze student assessment and classroom data, to assist GSRP in identifying strengths and needs in support of an early literacy continuum. 15. Consistently models Win-Win leadership.Other Duties:
1. Represents Genesee Intermediate School District at meetings. 2. Performs other related duties as assigned.Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood or related field. Master's degree preferred. OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited university and possess a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with certification in Birth through Kindergarten (B-K), Prekindergarten (PreK) through Grade 3 (PreK-3) or an Early Childhood Education endorsement (ZA).Experience:
A minimum of two years successful teaching experience or other related experience in working with children from birth to kindergarten is preferred. Preferred experience teaching at-risk children in the area of literacy. Familiarity and success with utilizing screening and formative developmental assessments with children to determine appropriate strategies and intervention.Skills/Other:
Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, problem solving skills and the ability to work as an effective team member. Knowledge of current birth to five state literacy standards. Instructional skills and knowledge in early literacy components such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. The administration and the use of data from the kindergarten screeners. Ability to use observational data and formative assessment processes to guide professional learning and coaching. Demonstrate training/knowledge of Cognitive Coaching, Reading Recovery, or related areas. Ability to utilize data to determine strategies and intervention needed. Experienced in utilizing technology as an instructional and organizational tool. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to utilize district technology, and work to maintain proficiency, as required skill sets change with technology and/or the needs of the district. Ability to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with program goals and objectives. Maintains a positive working relationship with parents/guardians, children and staff. Punctuality and good attendance are requirements for the position. Ability to work a flexible workday, work week, and work year. Demonstrate professional discretion with confidential information. Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and professionalism at all times. Ability to exercise good judgment and make decisions in accordance with the board policies and established administrative guidelines.Special Job Considerations:
