Works As Needed Purpose Statement The job of Specialist•Adult Education is done for the purpose/s of developing students' academic and interpersonal skills through academic day and evening courses of study and individualized instruction; implementing approved pre and post testing; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of students within a safe and optimal learning environment and providing feedback to students and program administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc. Essential Functions Administers tests (e.g. basic skills, GED practice tests, TABE, etc.) for the purpose of assessing students' skill level in specific academic areas and/or preparedness for GED testing. Assesses student's academic skills (e.g. math, language, reasoning, literacy, etc.) for the purpose of determining appropriate course of study and providing feedback to students regarding progress, expectations, goals, etc. Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities. Collaborates with other instructional personnel for the purpose of assessing student progress, planning class and individualized curriculum, evaluating instructional materials, etc. Demonstrates methods required to perform assignments and/or skills (e.g. job applications, interviewing, basic education subject matter, testing, etc.) for the purpose of providing the students with a model to successfully perform academic and/or job seeking skills. Instructs students in a basic education subject matter and GED requirements for the purpose of improving their opportunity for success in performing the basic skills areas of reading, writing, math and/or a receiving a GED certificate. Interacts with personnel from various public and private agencies for the purpose of collaborating on issues that may affect student success. Participates in various meetings (e.g. advisory board, in-service training, department meetings, professional development, etc.) for the purpose of collaborating with other personnel, conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions, and/or addressing professional development requirements. Prepares instructional materials and reports (e.g. student progress, anecdotal records, quarterly State reports, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans, providing documentation student progress, addressing State requirements. Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of implementing and/or referring for appropriate corrective action.Other Functions Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment; preparing and maintaining accurate records; methods of instruction.KNOWLEDGE
is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: community resources; academic subject matter; and lesson plan development. ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups of individuals; motivating students, analyzing data; being patient, maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; working as part of a team; working in an instructional environment with frequent interruptions; adhering to district policies, and regular attendance except when taking approved leave.Responsibility Responsibilities include:
working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization's services. Working Environment The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and some fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 30% sitting, 10% walking, and 60% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment. Experience Job related experience is required.
