Job Description

DEFINITION
To provide classroom instruction to student inmates at New Hanover Correctional Center through lecture, demonstration, laboratory exercises, handouts, responding to questions, and testing. Provide instruction in all 5 areas of the HiSET exam, including language arts, writing, social studies, math and science. Must be familiar with Adult Basic Education curriculum and be able to keep accurate records.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction and supervision from Director of Adult Basic Education, High School Equivalency & Special Programs, Academic & Career Readiness. Exercises no supervision.
ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to:
Essential Functions:
Adhere to all guidelines, rules, policies and procedures of New Hanover Correctional Center. Provide classroom and laboratory instruction to students. Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities; develop and prepare supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessons. Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores. Participate in curriculum development, evaluation, and change; attend faculty meetings as required. Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance. Stay abreast of new developments and changes in adult education and high school equivalency. Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area.
Other Important Functions:
Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lesson format; evaluate various text books and select books to be used for future classes. Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge:
Classroom and laboratory instructional techniques and procedures. Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the area of assignment. Current trends, research, and development in the area of assignment. Principles and procedures of record keeping. Principles and techniques involved in test development and administration. Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
Ability To:
Interpret and apply college goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations. Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: making observations reading and writing communicating with others operating assigned equipment handling varied tasks simultaneously. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: standing or sitting for extended periods of time operating assigned equipment preparing and presenting instructional material. Maintain mental capacity, which allows the capability of: making sound decisions responding to questions demonstrating intellectual capabilities. Communicate clearly, and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Minimum Education/Training:
Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:
One or more years of experience in an instructional setting as a tutor or teacher are preferred. One or more years of experience working in a correctional facility is preferred.
Work Environment:
This position is located at a correctional facility. This position receives specific direction relating to correctional policies and procedures from administrative and custodial staff at the prison work site. Special Instructions to
