Part-Time Opportunity Literacy Teacher Location(s): Floater
Remote/On-site:
On-site Duties and Responsibilities This part-time position will provide literacy instruction to the Queens Public Library's Adult Learner Program (ALP), specifically to our ABE and Pre-HSE classes and students. The Literacy Teacher will also provide specialized educational support and/or one-on-one instruction and guidance to students - to ensure quality of instruction, effective programming, and adequate documentation towards positive educational gain. Performs other duties as required. Program Quality Ensures programming quality based on quality of instruction, and high post-test rate and educational gain. Conducts creative and engaging lessons to teach reading and writing (as well as math, science, and social studies skills) to adults preparing for their HSE diploma - specifically, conducts student ABE/Pre-HSE and/or literacy performance assessments & student/participant satisfaction, to each student to formally evaluate the student's readiness to take the TASC test. Assists with maintaining and/or enhancing enrollment number and retention rates, as well as the evaluation and management of ABE and Pre-HSE programming. Class Management and Enrollment/Retention Helps to maintain student files and records by monitoring student attendance and other student-related documentation and record for submission to supervisor. Assists with intake and assessment of students, then their follow-ups towards positive outcomes. Recommends appropriate materials to students, including assisting students with computer-assisted instruction and small group instruction. Establishes relationships with community based organizations and social service organizations to expand ALP program offerings. Professional Development/Training and Literacy Advocacy Participates in orientation, staff meetings and trainings as required to assess students' reading/writing abilities and provide suggestions on improvement of curriculum and materials. Develops and uses appropriate tools to measure qualitative outcomes of adult literacy students' progress. Selects and orders quality adult literacy books for distribution at workshops and through ALC classrooms. Develops and presents literacy and other workshops to adult learners and other program participants. Facilitates special adult literacy events and participates in literacy booths at community festivals and events. Staff/Volunteer Engagement Helps to facilitate and/or attend staff meetings and staff development trainings. Participates in at least two teacher observations per year (that includes a pre-observation discussion and a post-observation debriefing for evaluation purposes) - while ensuring that performance plans are being followed through timely reviews and by providing feedback for improvement. Position Information The rate of pay for this position is $46.00 per hour. The schedule for this position will include Saturdays and evenings as well as site visits for scheduled teacher observation and other feedback meetings, as required, with a maximum of 17 hours per week. This is a non-union position. Part-time positions do not offer any medical or health benefits. Education and Experience/Qualifications Minimum Bachelor's Degree required. MA in TESOL or related field; also, adult education certification and/or 2-3 year's experience teaching adults are preferred, as well as TABE and/or BEST Plus/BEST Literacy certification. Some evening and weekend hours are required.
Knowledge of computers:
Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Internet. Strong customer service skills; also, reliable, responsible, punctual, patient, flexible and courteous. Knowledge of National Reporting System is a plus.
