About us:
The mission of the English Empowerment Center (EEC) is to teach adults the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English so they can access employment and educational opportunities and more fully and equitably participate in the community. Each year, we serve 2,000 adult English language learners from 90 different countries who speak over 50 different languages with the help of over 500 volunteers who give more than 20,000 hours of service.
Position Overview:
Pay:
$25 / hour, includes teaching time and some planning time.
Class location and schedule:
This position is in person. The class will be held in Lorton. Tuesdays & Thursdays, early afternoons (tentatively, 12:00-2:00 PM). Starting mid-July and running for 10 weeks . Occasional travel to our office in Falls Church is required. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Teach English for workplace communication to adults of immigrant or refugee background representing a wide range of cultures and educational backgrounds. Use an integrated and contextualized learning approach to teach workforce communication skills. Create engaging and effective lesson plans aligned to curricular goals and learner needs. Incorporate assigned textbooks, authentic materials, and technology as appropriate. Collaborate with volunteer class aides to maximize classroom learning opportunities. Record and update online class records, such as attendance, homework completion, and assessments. Participate actively in meetings and student assessment. Travel to the EEC office in Falls Church to pick up and drop off materials. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds of books and other materials. Required Qualifications:
2 years ESL/EFL/English for Specific Purposes classroom teaching experience with adults or other strong teaching background Experience working with a diverse learner population Bachelor's degree
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Adult Education, or a closely related field Completion of a 120-hr TESOL certificate (with 6-hour practice teaching) Experience delivering intercultural communication training or other similar experience Experience incorporating technology to engage, enhance, and extend learning Experience teaching learners with limited or no prior formal schooling Proficiency in Spanish or another language English Empowerment Center is an Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE).
