The Ceramics Lab Assistant will work under the direct supervision of the Ceramics Discipline Coordinator and overarching Art Discipline Coordinator. Undergo necessary UH trainings as required by Leeward's Administrative Services and practice accordingly. Kiln Operations & On site supervision: Provide extended and after hours surveillance during the 12-18 hour preheat, oversee firings including time that extends past 11:00 PM and during weekends. Address kiln issues during firings.Kiln Tasks:
Loading and unloading, cleaning and 'kiln-washing' shelves. Provide specialized knowledge for loading and unloading student work to maximize kiln space and prevent damage.Studio Maintenance:
Cleaning, organizing, clay reclamation, equipment upkeep, and other duties to ensure space and materials are clean, accessible & available during peak teaching hours. Help maintain supplies, safety protocols, general studio upkeep to ensure seamless studio operations.Glaze Lab:
Raw material inventory, maintenance, organizing and glaze mixing.Safety Supervision:
Monitor students during open lab hours to ensure safety protocols are followed while using wheels, slab rollers, extruders, etc. Educational /Instructional Support and Community Outreach:
Provide demonstrations on basic ceramic techniques to Leeward students and employees. Other duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Art or related field and one year of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for ceramics spaces; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated. Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of ceramics demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with kilns. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the area of ceramics and general art classes. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer. Ability to work flexible hours, including late evenings and weekends.Desired Qualifications:
Three years of experience with glaze chemistry and clay body reclamation. Experience working with a diverse student body, including Early College and kupuna participants. Familiarity with executing specific Ceramics curriculum and course schedules to better support Ceramics faculty, staff, and students.To Apply :
