Job Description

The Hawbridge School seeks a passionate, hands-on Horticulture Teacher to lead a dynamic 712 program that integrates environmental science, agriculture, and place-based learning. This position will design and deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction while overseeing and maintaining the school garden as a living classroom.

The ideal candidate will foster student curiosity, environmental stewardship, and real-world application through experiential learning, fieldwork, and community partnerships.

Program & Course Alignment (NC CTE)The Horticulture Teacher will develop and teach courses aligned to the North Carolina Career and Technical Education (CTE) Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources pathway, including: Horticulture I foundational plant science, soil systems, and plant growthHorticulture II advanced horticulture practices, greenhouse management, and landscape designMiddle school exploratory courses aligned to CTE and science standardsAll courses will align with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (CTE and Science standards) and support career readiness and postsecondary pathways.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and deliver a standards-aligned horticulture curriculum for grades 712, aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (CTE standards)Develop lesson plans, units, and assessmentsProvide hands-on, project-based learning experiences, including garden-based instruction and outdoor labsDifferentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs and promote student engagementIntegrate place-based education and cross-curricular opportunities
School Garden & Outdoor Learning Spaces:
Maintain and manage the school garden Oversee planting schedules, irrigation, soil management, and seasonal maintenanceEnsure safe and effective use of tools, equipment, and outdoor facilities
Community Engagement:
Plan and coordinate field trips and outdoor learning experiences connected to horticulture Build partnerships with local farms, environmental organizations, and community groupsProvide opportunities for career exploration and real-world application
Assessment & Professional Responsibilities:
Assess student learning through projects, performance tasks, and traditional measuresMaintain accurate records and communicate progress with familiesCollaborate with staff to support interdisciplinary and place-based learningParticipate in school meetings, MTSS processes, and professional development
Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Horticulture, Agriculture Education, Environmental Science, or related fieldNorth Carolina teaching license (or eligibility) in Agriculture Education or a related areaExperience with gardening, greenhouse management, or environmental educationStrong classroom management, organizational, and communication skillsCommitment to hands-on, experiential learning
Work Environment:
Combination of classroom and outdoor instructionRegular work in the garden and outdoor settings in varying weather conditionsOccasional travel for field trips and community-based learning
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience teaching middle and/or high school studentsKnowledge of sustainable agriculture and environmental practicesExperience coordinating field trips or outdoor education programsInterest in expanding CTE programming and partnerships
Compensation:
