Job Description

This position is for a 1.0 FTE Career and Technical Education Instructor, Agriculture Science Education Teacher at W.F. West High School for the 2026-27 school year. This position is open until filled. For best consideration, please apply by June 12, 2026.

To develop in each pupil the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing that are fundamental to good communication and literate citizenship; to discover and develop special talents of pupils in the designated career field(s); to prepare students for participation in post-secondary school career and technical programs or direct job placements in the designated career area(s). To provide classroom, laboratory, shop, and/or field-based instruction in the designated career and technical area(s), with primary responsibility for Agriculture Science (AFNR) pathway courses. Welding, fabrication, agricultural mechanics, and related shop-based instruction may be included as part of the assigned Agriculture pathway program. This position includes a supplemental contract to serve as one of the Chehalis FFA chapter advisors; supporting student leadership, competition, and supervised agricultural experience opportunities connected to the Agriculture Science program. Example Courses Assigned This position may include responsibility for Agriculture Science pathway courses such as:
Biology A and B, CTE:
Students participate in hands-on life science labs, research assignments, and group projects focused on organisms, ecosystems, matter cycles, and energy flow through an Agriculture Science pathway approach, while utilizing Washington State Next Generation Science Standards.
Animal Biology A and B:
Students study animal behavior, large animal production, nutrition, health management, disease prevention, livestock selection, and public policy related to animal agriculture through hands-on and live-animal learning experiences.
Veterinary Science/Vet Tech:
Students explore animal health, veterinary practices, animal handling, anatomy and physiology, disease prevention, clinical skills, and career opportunities in veterinary and animal care fields.
Welding, Fabrication, and Metal Art:
Students learn shop safety, welding setup and shutdown procedures, plasma cutting, oxy-acetylene cutting and welding, SMAW, GMAW, TIG welding, fabrication, computer-aided drafting, CNC plasma cutting, and project-based metal art design.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Performance Responsibilities:
Assume responsibility for implementing and teaching a career and technical education course(s) in the designated career and technical education area. Center instruction on high expectations for student achievement and career readiness. Provide clear and intentional focus on subject matter content and curriculum. Recognize individual student learning needs and develop strategies to address those needs. Assume responsibility for implementing and teaching a specialized program in the subject area. Teach courses in subject area to secondary students utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Directors and appropriate curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching individual course content. Supervise shop, lab, classroom, and field-based instructional areas cooperatively with other staff members. Participate in advisory committee activities as directed by school administration and required by state and national CTE guidelines. Work in a team environment with Agriculture, Trade and Industry, Science, and Career and Technical Education faculty. Implement Washington Career and Technical Education standards. Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day. Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district. Use multiple student data elements to modify instruction and improve student learning. Plan a program involving demonstrations, lectures, discussions, student experiments, laboratory activities, shop-based learning, supervised agricultural experiences, and project-based instruction; organize laboratory and shop activities for optimal learning. Demonstrate effective teaching practices. Establish rapport, communicate and collaborate with parents and the school community. Develop lesson plans and appropriate instructional aids stressing discovery, laboratory learning, shop safety, project-based learning, and career-connected instructional methods. Demonstrate subject area concepts using models, visual aids, technological hardware and software, industry tools and equipment, and other standard or teacher-prepared instructional aids. Design learning activities that will relate subject area content to the physical world, agriculture, animal science, applied science, agricultural mechanics, welding, fabrication, and related career fields based on industry standards. Exhibit collaborative and collegial practices focused on improving instructional practice and student learning. Foster and manage a safe, positive learning environment. Provide individual or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students and to accommodate circumstances where a variety of projects are being worked on simultaneously. Provide for safe storage and proper use of materials, equipment, tools, supplies, and instructional resources. Perform routine maintenance checks on equipment and facilities to ensure health and safety of shop users. Make minor adjustments and request repairs to equipment as required. Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior for a productive learning environment during class sessions, laboratory sessions, shop activities, field trips, supervised agricultural experiences, and project-based learning experiences. Evaluate each pupil's progress in subject area knowledge and skills. Select and request books, instructional aids, science equipment, shop equipment, tools, materials, and supplies and maintain inventory records as required. Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities. Identify pupil needs, and cooperate with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems. Serve as advisor for the local FFA chapter and support student participation in leadership development events, career development events, fairs, competitions, supervised agricultural experiences, and other AFNR pathway activities. Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs. Assist students in selection and development of individual research projects and other supervised agricultural experiences. Communicate with school counselors on student progress. Perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation. Complete work at assigned workstation(s). Consistently deal with people in a courteous and professional manner. Perform other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications:
Hold a valid Washington State Teaching Certificate in an AFNR related subject and/or valid Washington State Career and Technical Education Certificate appropriate for the assigned instructional area; OR be eligible to obtain appropriate certifications for the designated instructional area. Candidates with appropriate industry experience may be considered for conditional CTE certification or additional CTE specialty-area approval for welding-related and other AFNR coursework, as allowed by OSPI and district requirements. Ability to serve as the FFA advisor and support student leadership activities, competitions, fairs, supervised agricultural experiences, and career-connected learning opportunities is required. Welding, fabrication, agricultural mechanics, shop safety, CNC plasma cutting, and/or metal art experience preferred. Ability to use or willingness to learn computer-aided drafting technology, CNC plasma cutting table applications, and related instructional technology as appropriate to the assigned program. Skills to motivate students, communicate effectively with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate student performance, and demonstrate activities. Demonstrate knowledge of the ability to integrate technology with other forms of classroom, laboratory, shop, and project-based instruction. Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic and language diversity is preferred. Knowledge of age appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum, benchmarks and frameworks, education code, appropriate instructional subjects, CTE standards, and safety expectations. Willingness to supervise/direct extracurricular activities. Knowledge of curriculum, education code, and district policies. Abilities to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks, maintain records, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, other school personnel, meet schedules and deadlines. Significant physical abilities include, lifting/carrying, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception and may include lifting/carrying up to 25 lbs. Skills to promote learning of designated career and technical education area, motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, and evaluate performance. Ability to provide safe and effective instruction in classroom, laboratory, shop, field-based, and project-based learning settings.
