The School of Architecture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications for the Digital Futures Fellowship, a two-year full-time appointment at the rank of Lecturer. The Fellowship is intended for emerging scholars and practitioners interested in teaching architecture and interdisciplinary design courses while developing a collaborative research agenda anchored in the College's existing Digital Futures Lab. The position is designed to support candidates at a formative stage of their academic careers and prepare them for future tenure-track appointments. Notably, each of the last five fellows appointed by the School of Architecture has gone on to a tenure-track faculty position. The Digital Futures Fellow will also manage and evolve the Digital Futures Lab. About the Digital Futures Lab The Digital Futures Lab was established in 2023 as a shared resource for teaching, learning, experimentation, and collaborative research focused on technologies that shape design practice. The Fellowship rotates among the disciplines of the College of Architecture and Design, with the Digital Futures Fellow housed in the School of Architecture from Fall 2026 through Spring 2028. The Lab includes established resources for artificial intelligence, virtual, augmented, and extended reality, digital visualization, video production, 3D scanning, motion capture, and other emerging forms of digital practice and research. The Fellow will steward and maintain the Lab's resources, promote their use across the College, and help shape its future direction through teaching, research, workshops, and other programming. The School welcomes candidates whose work places media and technologies in dialogue with enduring questions in architecture while exploring unconventional, hybrid, and experimental approaches to practice, representation, and making. Fellowship Responsibilities Teaching Teach one or two courses per semester, with exact teaching load determined collaboratively with the School of Architecture Director. Courses will include a combination of architecture studios, disciplinary coursework, and interdisciplinary electives open to students across the College of Architecture and Design. Integrate Digital Futures Lab resources into teaching while supporting broader curricular engagement with the Lab. Research Develop a self-directed research agenda using resources in the Digital Futures Lab. Pursue collaborative projects involving faculty, students, and allied research facilities within the College. Contribute to a culture of experimentation, inquiry, and collective knowledge production. Digital Futures Lab Shape the future direction of the Digital Futures Lab. Develop programming, workshops, and research initiatives aligned with the Fellow's interests and expertise. Collaborate with the College's Fab Lab and Information Technology team to interconnect the Digital Futures Lab with resources and cultures of making across the College. Support student experimentation and research. Supervise student assistants and maintain the Lab's facilities, equipment, and resources. Public Engagement Share research through a public lecture and exhibition at the conclusion of the Fellowship. Areas of Inquiry The School seeks candidates whose work examines how digital media reshape the ways architecture is conceived, represented, made, and understood. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work treats technology, culture, practice, and knowledge not as separate domains, but as intertwined conditions of architectural production. The Fellow's research agenda and future direction of the Digital Futures Lab will likely engage some combination of the following areas: Artificial intelligence Computational design Representation and visualization Robotics and automation Digital fabrication Simulation and modeling Mixed and extended reality Data-driven design Sensing and responsive environments Experimental and hybrid media practices These examples are intended to be suggestive rather than prescriptive. Qualifications Required Professional degree in Architecture (NAAB-accredited M.Arch/B.Arch or international equivalent). Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching, design research, and creative practice. Preferred Post-professional degree or research degree. Experience with collaborative research. Experience working with emerging media and technologies in architecture and design.
